Organisations are facing a challenging time with demand on services ever increasing, NHS England figures show that in a comparison Q3 2013/14 to Q3 2014/15 ‘The number of decisions to admit increased by 63,188 (4.3%) to 1.5 million.’ Dr Sarah Pinto-Duschinsky from NHS England cited in the Telegraph Stating that in the run up to Christmas there were ‘112,600 emergency admissions - the highest number in a single week since we started publishing performance figures in 2010."
Pressures seen in organizations are not something new and we can see that time given to students has been identified some years ago; Watson in 2000 study identified that 43% of the respondents to (mentors) felt that they were not giving enough time to their students. Eight years later and Myall et al.(2008) showed that mentors identified increased work load as a constraint on their time. The NHS is facing ever more increasing demands and more recently Veeramah (2012) a multi professional study noted that ‘70% of the 199 mentors taking part in the study cited lack of time and 67% cited conflict between the competing demands of being a mentor and providing patient care’
Our first responsibility as health care professionals is to our patients as outlined by NHS constitution (2013) The NMC The Code, Professional standards of practice and behavior for nurses and midwives (2015) P8 statement 9.4 outlines Nurses and midwives responsibility when supporting students and colleges stating “Support students’ and colleagues’ learning to help them develop their professional competence and confidence”.
