#WeMDT - Wednesday 20th January 2016 8pm (GMT Standard Time) Blood Pressure - Prevention, Detection and Management

If you haven't joined in a tweet chat before it's very simple.    Here's a guide

Hosted by WeNurses using #WeMDT

This chat is guest hosted by @NHSEnglandSI

Blood pressure measurement is one of those fundamental activities that we undertake regularly for the people we care for.   However as nurses, healthcare professionals and service commissioners, we know that this physiological measurement is hugely important and high blood pressure can have far reaching implications.

High blood pressure is a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease and it is estimated that high blood pressure related diseases costs the NHS over £2 billion every year.

Figures show that Over 5 million people are unaware they have high blood pressure yet it affects more than 1 in 4 adults and is one of the biggest risk factors for premature death and disability in England.”  (Public Health England 2014).

The recent publication Tackling High Blood Pressure: From Evidence into Action (Public Health England 2014) underlines the importance of leadership, collaboration and improvement across all areas of blood pressure pathways but specifically identifies three main areas:

Prevention – Detection – Management

We have adapted these areas into the graphic below:

This #WeMDT discussion builds on from the recent #WeNurses discussion - following the responses and participation in the last chat we felt  it was important to have  a wider discussion with multi-professional perspectives as blood pressure cuts across all aspects of healthcare – as such we have involved more professional voices to form a virtual  multidisciplinary team: Nurses including Mental Health Nurses and all areas of nursing,  Healthcare Assistants, Doctors, Pharmacists, Commissioners; essentially  each have a vital role in high blood pressure prevention, detection and management.

We aim to explore the following questions:

  • Why does high blood pressure matter?
  • What can we do to prevent high blood pressure?
  • What can we do to detect high blood pressure?
  • What can we do to manage high blood pressure?
  • How can we work as part of a multi-disciplinary team to prevent, detect and manage high blood pressure?
  • How can we optimize treatment and care for blood pressure?
  • How can we commission and deliver services to target better prevention, detection and management?
  • What can you do to prevent, detect and manage high blood pressure?

For this discussion we will be joined by:

Jamie Waterall @JamieWaterall National Lead - NHS Health Check & Blood Pressure Programme Public Health England

Dr Matt Kearney @DrMattKearney  MPH FRCP MRCGP National Clinical Advisor, NHS England National Clinical Advisor, Public Health England, General Practitioner
