#WeDNs - Wednesday 29th June 2016 8pm (GMT Standard Time) Dementia care in the community

If you haven't joined in a tweet chat before it's very simple.    Here's a guide

 Chat Details

Hosted by WeCommNurses using #WeDNs

In the UK there are over 850,000 people with dementia, with numbers set to rise to over 1 million by 2025 and to 2 million by 2051 (Alzheimer’s Society 2016). One in six people over the age of 80 have dementia and there are over 40,000 people under 65 with dementia in the UK.

An international perspective on dementia is contained within the World Health Organisation’ s (2012) report “Dementia:a public health priority”. This report raises awareness of dementia as a public health priority, and discusses a public health approach for action at international and national levels. Within the UK all four countries have developed strategies to provide care and support for people with dementia and their families and carers.  You may find it useful to access the strategy relevant to the country you work in.

England:

https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/2010-to-2015-government-policy-dementia/2010-to-2015-government-policy-dementia

Scotland:

Wales:

N Ireland:

https://www.health-ni.gov.uk/publications/improving-dementia-services-northern-ireland-regional-strategy

It is widely known the right support given to the person with dementia can enable them to live independently at home for longer.

This chat will explore the role of the community nurse in supporting people with dementia, and their carers and families in the community. Prior to the chat you may also be interested in some stories around dementia on the ‘patient voices’ website:

http://www.patientvoices.org.uk/di.htm

Chat Questions

The questions we will explore are:

What impact do you think thgrowing number of peoplwitdementia  will have on community nursing in the uk?

How can we improveservices for people with dementia?

What have you seen that works in different care settings?

Are there any resources you have found useful to support people with dementia and their carers remain at home?

What technology is available in your area to support care of the person with dementia?
