#WeDNs - Wednesday 31st August 2016 8pm (GMT Standard Time) CPD and post registration education for community nurses

If you haven't joined in a tweet chat before it's very simple.    Here's a guide

 Chat Details

Hosted by WeCommNurses using #WeDNs

Continuing Professional Development (CPD) is an important part of every professional's career and is an ongoing process. In nursing the NMC Code (2015)and the revalidation process are explicit in the importance of CPD. While the purpose of the revised code is ultimately to protect the public, the code also supports the registered professional in relation to accountability and responsibility. Revalidation provides the opportunity for reflection upon practices against the NMC code and identifies that continuing professional development is an essential requirement for all nurses. It is a requirement that within a three-year period every nurse has a minimum of 35 hours CPD of which 20 must be participatory.

CPD can be considered on many levels and offers an opportunity for personalised learning but also in many cases it supports the priorities and workforce needs within organizations. For some nurses working in the community this will involve activities such as using protected learning time in practice to explore a significant event, undertaking personal reflection and for others engaging in Twitter and online networks can be seen to contribute to CPD(Morley & Chinn, 2015).  Others will undertake formal learning, which may involve undertaking a stand-alone module at a University such as wound care or palliative care and others progress to undertaking a post registration degree such as district nursing to gain a promoted post. This chat will explore the opportunities for CPD in the community and will consider the following questions:

  • What CPD opportunities are available in your organization for community staff nurses?

  • What CPD opportunities are available for District Nurses?

  • What does CPD look like for you?

  • Have you a CPD plan?

  • How is your area of practice supporting revalidation and the CPD requirements?

  • What support it available to you if you choose to undertake formal learning?

  • Is experiential learning valued by you and your employer

  • Who funds CPD in your area?

  • What are the challenges and facilitators to accessing CPD?
