#WeNurses - Thursday 26th May 2016 8pm (GMT Standard Time) Beyond the bedside: Making the transition to nurse manager

If you haven't joined in a tweet chat before it's very simple.    Here's a guide

 Chat Details

Hosted by WeNurses using #WeNurses

The Shape of Caring Review (2015) articulated wonderfully the importance of the nursing workforce by stating that nurses "play a vital role in enabling our healthcare service to meet the complex health challenges of today and tomorrow; providing compassionate care and support in times of illness and distress while simultaneously helping people stay healthy" and nurses do this in many differing ways, from assisting with personal care to developing strategies and policies to ensure care remains of the highest possible quality.  However nursing is often seen as being 'by the bedside" and it can be difficult for nurses to make the transition from the bedside into to more senior or management roles. Nurses can not only "miss" the face to face care and find it hard to move up but also there is the highly debated question "is management still nursing?"

In a recent lecture Professor June Girvin (you can watch the lecture here - June starts to talk about moving into management roles about 20 minutes in) explained how she made the transition from nurse to manager by stating that each promotion she had in her career was motivated by thinking she could do a better job and that she could make things better for patients and better for nursing staff. June also talks about moving on from a clinical role and says that she asked herself "how could she still be a nurse but not be a nurse?" and how her whole identity was challenged. June states that moving out of clinical practice felt like a betrayal and she was helped by a personal coach to realise that all the amazing skills she had in nursing were transferable into nursing education.

Nursing is a wide and diverse profession but moving up the career ladder often means moving away from the bedside and this can be tough. This #WeNurses discussion aims to explore the transition from the bedside into management and how it is still nursing and we can make a difference to patient care from where ever we may nurse.  Some of the following questions will be asked:

  • Are nurse managers still nurses ?
  • How can we help nurses to make the transition to manager?
  • What strategies can we employ to ease the transition?
  • How can we continue to impact care?
  • How do we manage the shift in our identity as nurses?

Thanks to @Toribird79 for inspiring this discussion with her recent tweets and blog post
