On Thursday 25th August we are delighted to be joined by Roz Cambell to discuss productivity and NHS services. Although the work of the Carter Programme focuses on acute NHS trusts in England, we'll be making sure this chat covers themes applicable to healthcare services in all sectors and countries. 

Context

In response to the financial deficit that exists in NHS funding, services are being forced to look at whether what they do offers value for money. Although the NHS ranks as the best value healthcare system in the world (Davis et al, 2014), there is constant pressure to do more with less:

This brings to the fore the complex conversations regarding what represents value for money in healthcare. 

Productivity: who, what, where and how

Productivity addresses the challenges of doing more with the same, or fewer, resources and is simply defined as the ratio of all outputs produced as a ratio of the inputs used to produce them. This tweet chat aims to discuss how the productivity of AHPs can be quantified, and what good looks like, as well as how to identify data which most clearly and accurately indicate:

  • the costs of AHP services 
  • the value of those services (which could be outputs or outcomes).

This is easier said than done! During the chat we'll be discussing barriers and opportunities, priorities for NHS services, examples of work so far as well as how to support and influence work at a local and national level.

Questions to think about before the chat:

  1. What does productivity mean to you, your manager and to patients?
  2. What can impact on our productivity at work? 
  3. What steps can we take to maximise the productivity of our services? 
  4. Why is it important for us to measure productivity? 
  5. Who currently measures the productivity of your service? What approaches or tools do you use?
  6. What are some of the challenges in measuring AHP productivity?
  7. What examples from the UK and internationally can we use to help us?

Rosalind Campbell is currently on secondment to the Department of Health, leading the AHP workforce efficiency programme, one of the recommendations of the Lord Carter report.  Roz is a physiotherapist by background and her substantive post is Head of Therapies and Quality Improvement for Suffolk Community Healthcare her responsibilities are to ensure the quality and safety of therapy services provided by Suffolk Community Healthcare.
