What end of life care education interventions are helpful in care homes?

With @elleysowerby from @fp7PACE and @waynedeleeuw from @DHHCeducation and @learnhospice from @WeEOLC

Join us to discuss and explore end of life in care homes - what's your experience and your thoughts?

The number of people over 85 in the UK is predicted to more than double in the next 23 years (ONS 2015). This increase will place increasing pressure on the health and social care system, with greater reliance on care homes to meet the needs of frail older adults living with multiple co-morbidities and complex needs.

Many care homes seek to provide high standards of person centred care for their residents. However, the care home sector generally reports high staff turnover and low staff morale, exacerbated by a lack of external support, responsiveness and professional respect (Hussein et al 2015). A culture of palliative and end of life education and development is important to help support staff in their role, and ensure that care is responsive, person centred and optimised to meet the needs of the individual. The diversity and skills required to provide this care effectively can prove challenging as it places a great onus on care staff who may have minimal external support or education.

It is suggested by Anstey et al (2016) that education is an important factor in helping to overcome some of the challenges in the delivery of end of life care in care homes. With a range of palliative and end of life care training available what works best for individual care homes can vary. This may be dependent on multiple factors such as staff turnover, cost, if the training is off/on site, if there is any ongoing support and the flexibility and structure of the training. The heart of any palliative and end of life intervention should ultimately be about making a difference by helping to nurture, support, and embed sustainable change.

There are a number of palliative and end of life care educational interventions available to care homes but they rely heavily on care homes investing in palliative and end of life education. By developing a robust culture of continuing education and development within care homes it can help promote staff engagement, develop collaborative networks and ensure that care is responsive, person centred and optimised to meet the palliative and end of life needs of each individual.

Join us to discuss and explore:

  • What are the advantages of end of life education in care homes?
  • What are the disadvantages?
  • What’s the best way to deliver palliative care interventions in care homes?
  • What factors might help to support the embedding and sustainability of end of life education in care homes?
  • How do we create supportive networks to support care home staff ?
  • Should palliative care education be mandatory in care homes?

some really important themes came up tonight: 1. partnership, education and doing with (learn from and with each other) 2. being with people as they die not just drug intervention symptom control 3. innovations such as social media, closed face book accounts, skype, technology and communities of practice 4. consider needs of managers, clinical and non clinical staff within care homes and within hospices and palliative care teams 5. education, coaching, mentoring, link nurse roles and simulation 6. defining what we mean by end of life and what type of education
