This chat is guest hosted by @Jones23Emma @JCrossley16

What value does the therapeutic relationship have for people living with a personality disorder diagnosis?

This is the first of a series of chats that #WeMHNs hopes to run on the theme of living with a diagnosis of Personality Disorder.

Chat Details

This chat will be held on Monday the 20th of June from 7.00-8.00p.m. We will be using our regular hashtag, #WEMHNS and a transcript of the chat will be available afterwards.

As with all our chats, everyone is welcome to join the conversation. Whether you are a Mental Health Nurse, other Health Care Professional, Academic, Service User, Carer or Citizen with an interest in the subject, we would like to hear your thoughts!

This chat will be facilitated by Emma Jones (@jones23Emma) and John Crossley (@jcrossley16)

Special thanks to Sue Sibbald, @BPDFFS for her helpful input into this pre chat

About the Chat

Personality disorder

We are mindful that the term personality disorder itself can cause stigma and that it’s usefulness for service users has been questioned because of this stigma (DH, 2014). For the purpose of this wechat we will refer to the term personality disorder for clarity, a general definition of personality disorder is given below for information, more information can be found on the websites under resources/ info.

People with a personality disorder may have difficulties in developing relationships, they may struggle with their emotions, feel rejected or hurt and at times may avoid people. They may feel distressed in different aspects of their life, for example, at work or with family or friends and can have difficulties coping with this distress (BPS, 2006; DH, 2014).

‘We all have personalities, and we all have aspects of our personalities that are troublesome at times. People with personality disorder are not fundamentally different from anyone else, but might, at times, need extra help.’ (DH, 2014).

Although borderline personality disorder is the most commonly diagnosed, this chat will look at personality disorder as a whole.

Therapeutic relationship

The therapeutic relationship is central to everything in mental health care (Welch, 2005).  The therapeutic relationship is also known as the therapeutic alliance, the working relationship, the helping relationship and the nurse-patient relationship. One definition explains the therapeutic relationship as a professional and interpersonal relationship where the nurse and service user work together to develop and achieve goals (Arnold, 2011). However despite the therapeutic relationship being widely highlighted as core in mental health care, there is difficulty in explaining what it actually is.

For people living with a personality disorder, who can struggle developing trusting relationships, (DH, 2014), the therapeutic relationship can be especially significant. It can be a frightening thing to open up and share things about yourself, your life and your experiences with a health care professional who you might not know very well. This can be particularly hard if you’ve had difficult experiences of relationships in the past.

We think that it is important within the context of the therapeutic relationship to encourage an open dialogue about personality disorder and what this means for the individual living with this diagnosis and how this might impact on the therapeutic relationship itself, what helps and what doesn’t.

These are the questions we will be covering during the chat

  • What is a therapeutic relationship to you?
  • What are your experiences of the therapeutic relationship? How does it feel?
  • What might be important within the context of a therapeutic relationship to a person living with a personality disorder diagnosis?
  • What might be important to consider for students building therapeutic relationships?
  • How can education help in supporting the development of therapeutic relationships?
  • What therapeutic value might peer support have for a person living with a personality disorder diagnosis?
  • How can we challenge stigma and change perceptions around the personality disorder diagnosis
  • What role can social media play in supporting people living with a personality disorder diagnosis?
