Hazards in the Home- accident prevention in the under 5's

Accidental injury is one of the biggest killers of children in the UK. Children from the poorest UK families are 13 times more likely to die in accidents and more likely to be admitted to hospital  with accidental injuries. Young children are most at risk of being seriously injured in the home. Safety advice given during home visits is particularly effective as it can be tailored to the home environment. Research shows that for families with an increased risk of accidents, home visiting can reduce the risk of accidents by more than 1/4 (National Children's Bureau 2004). Accident prevention is a high impact area for Health Visitors who are ideally placed to give this advice and make every contact count during Universal and targeted contacts.

On June 28th, we will be discussing the health visitor's role in preventing accidents, please consider some of the following points ready for the chat:

  • How is information given to the parents- is it backed up with literature, signposting to appropriate websites etc
  • Is the advice standardised and given at the correct stage of development for the child
  • Are parents aware of newer hazards and the risks they pose- e.g. button batteries, detergent liquitabs
  • How do we audit the effectiveness of the advice given, do you use a behaviour change tool
  • Examples of good practice of integrated working with other services to support parents

@WeHealthVisitor could that be due to high caseloads, being overstretched & understaffed so auditing isn't priority ? #WeHVs
