The first few minutes after birth are critical to an infant’s well-being, and increasing evidence suggests that rapidly clamping the umbilical after birth is detrimental to the newborn’s health.
The umbilical cord continues to pulsate for several minutes after birth1, pumping valuable blood and nutrients to the infant. Optimal cord clamping (OCC) is performed after a minimum of 60 seconds after birth or until the umbilical cord stops pulsating2. OCC increases neonatal blood volume by up to 30% in a term infant and by 50% inpreterm infants, compared to early cord clamping.
NICE guidelines recommend that cord clamping should take place between 1 and 5 minutes after birth so long as the heart rateis above 60 beats per minute3, however some maternity services have been slow to implement this practice.
During this chat we hope to explore thefollowing questions:

How can we best share information to help women make positive decisions about OCC?
What further evidence is needed to enhance our understanding of OCC?

How can we promote OCC to the wider community?
