Cardiovascular disease (CVD) accounts for one in four deaths in the UK (British Heart Foundation 2016)

The impact of CVD is huge*:

Death rates from CVD have declined significantly in recent decades. However, it needs to remain high on the health agenda, since coronary heart disease is the UK’s biggest single killer and there are 7 million people living with CVD in the UK. (British Heart Foundation 2016)

Public Health England has a central role to play in influencing evidence based national policies and providing guidance and tools to support effective intervention and implementation, and help measure progress at both national and local levels.

Just a few examples of PHE’s work to tackle CVD prevention include:

  • Updated Local Tobacco Control Profiles designed to inform commissioning and planning decisions to tackle tobacco use
  • The One You public health campaign aims to support adults across the country toavoid future diseases caused by everyday habits and behaviours
  • The National Cardiovascular Intelligence Network (NCVIN) provides a range of data and information on cardiovascular disease
  • PHE provides national oversight of the NHS Health Check programme
  • PHE is supporting the development of a CVD prevention pathway (to support NHS Right Care work) to incorporate hypertension, AF, high cholesterol, diabetes, pre-diabetes and chronic kidney disease.

On September 29th it’s World Heart Day (#WorldHeartDay) A day that raises awareness of CVD on a global scale.  On this day PHE is launching a new publication, ‘Action on Cardiovascular Disease: getting serious about prevention’.  This year WeCommunities, in collaboration with Public Health England, (@PHE_UK) will be holding a World Heart Day Twitter Discussion via #WeMDT. Health care professionals from all areas of care are invited to take part to discuss CVD – everyone is welcome. Some of the questions we will be exploring are:

  • Why is CVD important to us today?
  • How does what we know about CVD across the population help me target prevention activity?
  • What are the quick wins/opportunities for the different professions?
  • What should we continue doing/do more of?
  • What should we stop doing?
  • What should we be focussing on in the future re CVD?
  • What resources can help us to support the people we care for re CVD?

For this discussion we will be joined by:

Jamie Waterall (@JamieWaterall) Lead for Cardiovascular Disease Prevention, Associate Deputy Chief Nurse, Public Health England

Dr Matt Kearney, National Clinical Director for Cardiovascular Disease Prevention, NHS England; National Clinical Advisor, Public Health England; General Practitioner, Castlefields Runcorn
