#WeNurses - Tuesday 27th September 2016 8pm (GMT Standard Time) Wound Care

If you haven't joined in a tweet chat before it's very simple.    Here's a guide

 Chat Details

Hosted by WeNurses using #WeNurses

This chat is guest hosted by @rdjfraser

Wound Care was last a #WeNurses topic in Feb 2016, when participants discussed the challenges of providing wound care in the community. This September we’re bringing the focus back on wound when we discuss how to keep up to date in wound care as well as improve the quality of care when it comes to wound care. It’s particularly timely given September is Peripheral Arterial Disease (PAD) Awareness Month, and, coming up on Nov 17th, the European Pressure Ulcer Advisory Panel will hold STOP Pressure Ulcer Day. Clinicians are key to preventing ulcers, reducing amputation, and reducing all types of wounds that patients experience.

While many clinicians see wounds in practice, from a variety of sources (trauma, pressure, vascular, arterial, etc.), a small portion of nurses or physicians specialise in this area. For the past few years, pressure ulcers, now called pressure injury by some professional associations such as National Pressure Ulcer Advisory Panel (NPUAP),have been a topic of common clinical education and intervention training. While most nurses are, for example, familiar with the Braden scale, the landscape continues to evolve and as we encounter more complex patients at all life stages, we dealing with more and increasing complex wounds. There is also a growing awareness of other systemic issues (income, education, access, etc.) that impact wound healing and given that, what better way is there to learn about some current trends than joining in this chat focused on Wound Care.

To be transparent, I’m presenting at a wound care conference in Canada on Nov 3 where I’ll talk about the professional use of Twitter by health care providers. I hope to draw on questions that come up in this chat, hopefully the answers that are given, and professional dialogue that can happen by using #hashtags and participating in a regular online discussion of healthcare providers. While this chat is using the hashtag #WeNurses, I invite all of our professional colleagues, clients, caregivers and #WeCommunity participants to join in the discussion

Questions to be discussed include:

  • What was the latest wound care education or practice change you learned about?
  • How do you share updates at your organisation related to wound care?
  • How is your organisation trying to improve wound care and what lessons are you learning?
  • How do you support patients with wounds with the goal of them maintaining activities of daily living or having them get involved in their own wound care?
  • What could be done to improve wound care in your patient population, or prevent wounds from developing in your patient population?
  • Have you heard about the European Pressure Ulcer Advisory Panel’s STOP Pressure Ulcer campaign?
  • What questions do you have about wound care?
  • How do you think wound care could be done more effectively in your area?
  • Have you seen the new updates released by the NPUAP, which is changing some terminology and use of pressure ulcer classification terms?
