#WeNurses - Thursday 17th November 2016 8pm (GMT Standard Time) Pressure ulcers – what about the evidence?

If you haven't joined in a tweet chat before it's very simple.    Here's a guide

 Chat Details

Hosted by WeNurses using #WeNurses

This chat is guest hosted by @CochraneUK @SarahChapman30

November 17th is Stop Pressure Ulcer Day a day to help to raise awareness of pressure ulcers and what we can do to prevent them.

Pressure ulcers are and always have been high on the nursing agenda .. and rightly so:

  • Pressure ulcer cause patients long term pain and distress
  • Pressure ulcers can mean longer stays in hospital
  • 80 % - 95% of pressure ulcers are preventable
  • Treat pressure ulcers costs the NHS more that £3.8 million every day

However what is the evidence and research behind pressure ulcer prevention and treatment? What research is there out there to inform our practice around pressure ulcers?

For this discussion we will be teaming up with Sarah Chapman, Knowledge Broker from Cochrane UK and former nurse, to explore the evidence around pressure ulcers and what this means for our practice.  The discussion will be split in two parts …the first half will look at prevention and the second half will look at treatment.

We will be exploring some of the following areas:

  • Support surfaces
  • Repositioning
  • Nutritional interventions
  • Wound care teams for preventing & treating
  • Bed rest
  • Antibiotics & antiseptics
  • Dressings

About our guest host:

Sarah Chapman@SarahChapman30 is a former nurse whose work at @CochraneUK focuses on making evidence accessible via social media, including an ongoing series for nurses, Evidence for Everyday Nursing #EENursing, with blogs “EvidentlyCochrane" and blogshots, available on Tumblr

 Chat Summary

This #WeNurses discussion set out to explore peoples thoughts around the evidence surrounding pressure ulcers.  The discussion was separated into two parts ... prevention and treatment:

We started by asking questions about prevention of pressure ulcers:

The discussion then moved on to treatment of pressure ulcers and the evidence surrounding it:

And to finish here is a final thought from David Barton:
