#WeEOLC - Tuesday 1st November 2016 8pm (GMT Standard Time) Can we care too much?

If you haven't joined in a tweet chat before it's very simple.    Here's a guide

This chat is guest hosted by @heblau

Inspired by a recent Schwartz Round in the hospice where I work, I have been thinking about this issue for some time.

Many of us are familiar with the idea of compassion fatigue - a state experienced by those helping people who are suffering; it is an extreme state of tension and preoccupation with the suffering of those being helped to the degree that it can create a secondary traumatic stress for the helper. Regardless of our professional role, our work is focused on providing care.

The dictionary definition of care varies:

  1. the provision of what is necessary for the health, welfare, maintenance, and protection of someone (for example - "care of the elderly")
  2. serious attention or consideration applied to doing something correctly or to avoid damage or risk (for example - "it was necessary to plan the discharge with great care")
  3. to look after and provide for the needs of (for example - "I have fifteen patients to care for today")
  4. feel concern or interest; attach importance to something "I care about where I am looked after when I am dying"

There is also an important difference between caring for, and caring about.

But is it possible to care too much? And what would this mean for us, and for the people who are the recipients of this care?

How do we strike a balance between supportive empowerment, and paternalistic dis-empowerment?

This chat will ask you to think about this in the context of your role in end of life care - or you may be a person with a life-limiting illness or a family member or friend who wants to say something about this issue.

We look forward to seeing you on the 1st!
