#WeNurses - Thursday 2nd March 2017 8pm (GMT Standard Time) Is MUST a must?

If you haven't joined in a tweet chat before it's very simple.    Here's a guide

Hosted by WeNurses using #WeNurses

MUST ! Or (to avoid abbreviations!) the Malnutrition Universal Screening Tool is a widely used tool to assess adults who are at risk of malnutrition or obese.  My guess is that we have all seen it ... and many of us use it in our day to day practice ... but what do you think of it?

There can be no doubt that malnutrition is a serious problem, BAPEN explore the scale of malnutrition in the video below:

The RCN state "Nutritional screening is a quick, simple procedure that should be undertaken during the first meeting with the patient. Best practice is to undertake this screening as part of the admission or inital assessment of a person and that it is completed within the first 24 hours of arriving in a care setting. This review should be undertaken by a doctor, a registered nurse, or an HCA. It is critical for the early identification of the existence or high risk of malnutrition. Using an accredited screening tool, such as the 'Malnutrition Universal Screening Tool' ('MUST') raises the awareness of a patient's risk of malnutrition. If screening is not undertaken, patient safety may be compromised"

There is some evidence behind using MUST:

Assessing the benefits of a malnutrition screening tool - Nursing Times

The utilisation of the MUST nutritional screening tool on vascular surgical wards - BMJ

Nutritional assessment in elderly care: A MUST! - BMJ

Screening for malnutrition and the risk of malnutrition in hospital and the community - NCBI

These are just a few studies .... this #WeNurses discussion aims to explore beyond this and delve into your experience and thoughts around MUST.  We aim to ask the following questions:

  • Why is nutritional screening important?
  • Who should we screen for malnutrition?
  • What are the advantages of using MUST?
  • What are the limitations of MUST?
  • What happens after we have assessed with MUST?

Please join us to discuss screening for malnutrition - all views welcome.
