#WeNurses - Tuesday 13th June 2017 8pm (GMT Standard Time) Catheters - the evidence!

If you haven't joined in a tweet chat before it's very simple.    Here's a guide

 Chat Details

Hosted by WeNurses using #WeNurses

This chat is guest hosted by @CochraneUK @SarahChapman30

On Thursday the 13th June we will be discussing "Catheter Care" - what good catheter care looks like and how we can achieve it ... however there is much more to catheters than the care of them so we have teamed up with the fabulous Sarah Chapman at the Cochrane UK to explore catheters a little bit more.

This discussion aims to address the evidence behind catheters and what this all means for practice. A brilliant blog post on Evidently Cochrane by Helen Cowan (@HelenCCowan) "Urinary catheter care: what does the evidence say? explains much of the evidence available on long-term indwelling catheters and is well worth a read prior to this discussion. Look out for blogs on the evidence for managing short-term indwelling catheters and intermittent catheterisation, to be published ahead of our tweetchat, too.

(This is part of the Evidence for Everyday Nursing series of blogs on Evidently Cochrane - search #EENursing on Twitter for lots more great info)

In this blogs Helen addresses the confusion around catheters and identifies key questions:

    • Do specially designed urinary catheters reduce risk of CAUTI?
    • Are unrinary catheter washouts effective?
    • How frequently should a urinary catheter be changed?
    • Are there any advantages to antibiotics?
    • What is the optimum setting for catheter care?
    • Is catheter replacement a clean or an aseptic technique?
    • Is chlorhexidine superior to saline for periurethral cleansing?
    • Which lubricants should be used?
    • Are better outcomes achieved when patients or healthcare professionals manage their catheter care?

Some of the questions are answered with evidence in the blogs and some are not ... this Twitter Discussion aims to look at the evidence and how we can apply it to our everyday nursing by asking:

  • What is the evidence around catheters?
  • How do we translate this into practice?
  • What evidence gaps are there re catheters?
  • What do we do where evidence gaps exist?

We hope that you will join us for a week of catheter related tweets !

This discussion started by addressing the evidence around catheters and what it says:

It very quickly became apparent that there is a huge lack of evidence in this area of nursing, so what does this mean for our practice?

There was then some discussion around best practice:

Some final points were shared towards the end:
