Further to the publication of the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC) report about the dissatisfaction of some pre-registration trainees this #WePh chat will focus on pharmacist and pre-reg trainee experiences of training. The report indicated that while the majority of pre -registration trainees rated the overall quality of their training as very good or good (77%), 11% rated the overall quality of their training year as poor or very poor. 

There are levels of trainee dissatisfaction which are not always voiced to tutors or to the GPhC. The current requirement for becoming a pre-reg pharmacist tutor is three years in the sector of practise that the pharmacist wants to tutor in. For pharmacy technicians the tutor role is conducted by NVQ/QCF assessors who essentially do the same thing in terms of supporting their trainees and it could be reasonable to assume that this trainee group has similar experiences. 


The aim of this chat is to discuss experiences of both sets of trainees. 

Questions:

1. What are your experiences of looking after, or being, a pre-reg pharmacist or technician trainee?

2. Are the levels of dissatisfaction described in the GPhC report a true reflection of reality?

3. What attributes make a good tutor and how do we develop these in the profession?

4. Poor tutors can result in poor pharmacists and technicians. How do we break this cycle to ensure only appropriate pharmacists and technicians tutor trainees?
