Hosted by WeMidwives using #WeMidwives

This chat is guest hosted by @nmcnews @maryrenfrew

This #WeMidwives tweetchat is being held in conjunction with the NMC and will help inform the NMC's drafting process into redefining the standards that students will need to meet in order to join the midwifery profession.

The NMC state:

"Midwives in the UK are well trained, qualified and regulated. But the demands on modern midwives are constantly changing, with the need to deal with more wide-ranging challenges than ever before. The profile of pregnant women is changing, their birthing choices have never been more diverse and this (and more) is placing greater demands on what a midwife needs to know and be prepared for.

To make sure that the midwives of the future are ready for the challenges ahead, we are reviewing and working to future-proof the standards of proficiency for registered midwives. The new standards will outline what is required of student midwives before they can join the register and begin practising as qualified midwives."

(NMC 2018)

During this #WeMidwives discussion aims to explore the following questions:

1.            What are the knowledge and skills the future midwife should have at the start of their career?

2.            What role should midwives play in public health?

3.            What challenges do you think the midwife 2030 will face that are different to today?

4.            Midwives are leaders in maternity care - how should this evolve?

5.            So far we’ve heard  a lot from people that communication is key – what communication skills do you think midwives should learn?

6.            What are your hopes for midwifery in the future?

@WeMidwives I think the main skill is to be able to listen, and to be able to make space for what the woman is saying. We leave uni with so much knowledge, it’s only natural to want to put that into practice but if we cannot listen we cannot effectively be with woman. #wemidwives
