Visible leadership is not a new thing; the importance of having nursing leaders who are visible, accessible and role models was stressed some years ago in the Francis Report (2013) 



Furthermore the Kings Fund (2013) state “Leaders of NHS Organisations should work with staff to identify systemic problems and be visible in providing support to address the” It seems common sense that in order to lead nurses must be seen and not hidden away, unapproachable or absent!

However what is the reality of being omnipresent? Of knowing the way, going the way and showing the way? What does visible nursing leadership look like? And how can we achieve it? 

Throughout our nursing careers many of us would have met good nursing leaders and some not so good. As a newly qualified nurse back in the 1990’s I remember working on a ward where the ward sister was always around, working with us, supporting, mentoring and part of the team in every sense. I also remember the next ward I moved to, where the ward sister was always in the office, with the office door firmly shut and me quaking in my boots each time I passed the shut door. I can not recall ever seeing a director of nursing back then and I really had no idea who the national nursing leaders were.  Much has changed since then and the world has become a much more accessible place … but are nursing leaders visible and accessible enough? And how visible and accessible to we need and want them to be?

This #WeNurses discussion aims to explore the following questions around visible leadership:

  • What do we mean by visible leadership?
  • How important is it to have visible leaders in nursing at local level?
  • How important is it to have visible leaders in nursing at national level?
  • Is it possible and realistic for nursing leaders to be omnipresent?
  • What are the advantages/ disadvantages of visible leadership?
  • Is a more connected world a good or a bad thing for visible nursing leadership?
