Are you ready for QUESTION 1 ? Why do nurses leave organisations / leave the nursing profession? #WeNurses https://t.co/A6wMMidMyi
@VictoriaWDaley
12 September 2019 20:05
Hi all. So retention is an interesting one. Clearly it is something that every organisation aspires to do well by ensuring staff feel valued and developed, thus ensuring that they have pride in their work and deliver great care. #WeNurses
@AgencyNurse
12 September 2019 20:06
Was interested to see their approach - TRACs ... though do think we need more than this ! #WeNurses https://t.co/HDJxzpiQx6

Absolutely ... but perhaps easier said than done ... what should orgs actually do do you think ?? #WeNurses https://twitter.com/VictoriaWDaley/status/1172224728683241472

I think retention is perhaps not just about the things that people say ... good pay, great support, learning and career opportunities, but also about added extras .... #WeNurses
@dobdob86
12 September 2019 20:10
@WeNurses Stress, lack of support, lack of opportunity and flexible working are the main reasons that I’ve come across over two trusts #wenurses
@XMcVey
12 September 2019 20:11
@WeNurses I think nurses often leave looking for other opportunities. With what used to be LBR funding being scarce I think people search for organisations that might have better access to it #wenurses
@AgencyNurse
12 September 2019 20:11
.. for example my son has a job where they provide him with breakfast and lunch free of charge ... really simple thing but he feels valued and has stayed as a result ! #WeNurses

@XMcVey
12 September 2019 20:12
I also think lack of flexibility in rotas, shift patterns etc can be a big contributor for leaving #WeNurses

@WeNurses I think a good manager role models what they want their workforce to be doing, is approachable but fair and understands the need to be firm sometimes. I want a manager who has high standards and allows space for innovation, encouragement for staff to develop #wenurses

@WeNurses I agree, these are two different questions. Leaving an organisation doesn’t have to be negative, it could be for career or personal progression (moving areas); however people may leave nursing because they feel undervalued, lack of autonomy or increased stress. #WeNurses

@XMcVey
12 September 2019 20:29
@knitknitqueen @WeNurses I’ve known a lot of nurses do retire and return or work as legacy mentors. Nurses reaching retirement are so valuable and have so much knowledge that we lose when they leave #wenurses

@CalvinMoorley @AgencyNurse @Csage110 @WeNurses @C_Carmichael83 More complicated than that I think. Women fight to get leadership positions. Even in nursing, men will be promoted over them. @WeNurses Great question. I think it entirely depends on how the Nurse feels for being fit to do the job role and what the employer can offer if a change is needed. My clinical role is physical. I cannot imagine my parents (in early 70s) being able to do a 10hr shift in theatres #wenurses

@WeNurses There is loads of work happening that supports this where I work. A Health&Wellbeing Strategy and a proactive Freedom to Speak Up Guardian! All support a Safety Culture which we expect will lead to improved morale, less turnover, happier staff, safer care, happier pts #WeNurses

@theresahorne748 @wlasinclair @AgencyNurse @Cahill_Lou @WeNurses @C_Carmichael83 Aww that makes me happy! A care home really doesn’t need to be so formal ! Gives older people something else to think about and talk about #WeNurses

@Csage110 @wlasinclair @AgencyNurse @Cahill_Lou @WeNurses @C_Carmichael83 Exactly. It's meant to be a home, not a hospital. The kids join in crafts, gardening, music events or simply chat away. Even as a nightshift nurse my children as known to staff from just popping in during the day to say hello #wenurses

@carolgair @WeNurses TY for stating this Carol . I also know too many colleagues who didn't get to their retirement and that's part of my motivation for asking for more to be done about staff health&wellbeing. We're people, not robots, there's evidence about how shiftwork affects health. #WeNurses

@WeNurses The fact that management are quick to offer criticism and hide behind unworkable policy whilst the nurses giving valuable face to face feel disillusioned and scared for their registrations through sheer weight of expectation. We are working in a time of fear. #wenurses
