Wider Patient Engagement (WPE) – Listening to the Patient Voice

What is WPE and how can it help my nurse training?

Special Guests: Kim Young, James Munro, Leanne Patrick

“Hear the patient voice at every level – even when that voice is a whisper” BerwickReport, August 2013

WPE provides student nurses opportunities to develop a greater understanding of the importance of listening to what matters to patients, family members and service users. WPE activity can be undertaken in a variety of ways; virtual, face to face or a blend of the two. Flexibility is key to its success.

Kim Young, Associate Professor of Education at the University of Plymouth (UoP) School of Nursing and Midwifery, joins us to share her knowledge and experience as a pioneer in the field of WPE. Kim’s WPE work to date includes encouraging students to take lead roles with social media campaigns; working more closely with patient support groups; finding solutions to working with ‘hard to reach’ groups; and working with feed back platforms, alongside the Patients’ Association and Patient Opinion, to help gauge patient feedback and ensure best practice.  WPE has attracted scrutiny and interest from key national organisations particularly NHS England and Health Education England (HEE).  UoP nursing students were congratulated by HEE for their work during the pilot phase. UoP students now undertake WPE as part of our new 2019 nursing curriculum.

Kim will be joined by James Munro, CEO of Care Opinion to share with students how WPE activity can easily be incorporated into students’ placement learning and evidencing for practice outcomes. Care Opinion is all about connection, collaboration and change.

CareOpinion is the UK’s leading independent feedback website, enabling patients to share their experiences of healthcare services. Care Opinion focuses on promoting the patient voice and can help facilitate dialogue between patient and health services.  Students at UoP have been able to introduce changes in practice by engaging Care Opinion services within their local NHS Trusts.

Leanne Patrick, who recently completed her under graduate degree in Mental Health Nursing will also be joining us to share her experiences.  Leanne worked with Care Opinion in Scotland as a site moderator and also shares her experience of completing a quality improvement project introducing Care Opinion as an independent feedback service in one of her placement areas.

Would you like to be better prepared for your next placement, understand your patients’ care pathways, experiences of access to care in your local placement area? Perhaps you re already undertaking WPE activities as part of your degree and have ideas and experiences to share?

Join Kim, James and Leanne as we talk about WPE in the nursing curriculum at the University of Plymouth and how engaging in WPE projects and services like Care Opinion can improve not only your learning, but also enhance your knowledge of the importance of listening and responding to the patient voice.

I found the tweet chat very helpful. It was great to see what other STN's think of WPE and to find out how they've come across WPE within their programmes and degrees. Being able to share positive views about Care Opinion allowed me to understand that both STN's and RN's are involved in WPE. I feel that tweet chats provide a way for healthcare professionals to all collaborate together to improve WPE across a much larger area than just one institution

Snap shot of other WPE activities happening in Scotland. So we have some common understanding here that wider patient engagement coined by @KimYoun33934432 is all about listening to the patient voice...@CareOpinion is a tool that helps us to do just that. #WeStNs https://twitter.com/LeanneHPatrick/status/1176936241117433861

@WeStudentNurse @KimYoun33934432 @jamesfm55 @LeanneHPatrick My understanding so far is that there's an emphasis on the importance of listening to the views of the patient & their family, good or bad. WPE allows students/RNs to act on the feedback & potentially make changes/improvements as a result. #WeStNs

@WeStudentNurse @KimYoun33934432 @jamesfm55 @LeanneHPatrick WPE appears to focus on the little as well as the large issues patients encounter and provides patients with a platform to speak to us as professionals. We then have a responsibility to action these changes for our patients #WeStNs

@WeStudentNurse @KimYoun33934432 @jamesfm55 @LeanneHPatrick I think its about improving services and care, but also enabling patients and services users to engage more with their own health/ care plans/ treatment etc. this helps nurses and StNs to give person centred care and suits The Code #WeStNs

25 September 2019 20:15
@WeStudentNurse @KimYoun33934432 @jamesfm55 @LeanneHPatrick WPE is important as it can connect nurses and student nurses to the feedback and experiences that they have had in hospital and ward environments. @sam_thomas02
25 September 2019 20:45
@PUNC19_Emma @WeStudentNurse #WeStNs so up here in Scotland we actually require service user/relative feedback to document in our OAR... so on each placement we would look to gain feedback about our practice. I think getting students involved with focus groups, development meetings etc would also be good.
@LeanneHPatrick
25 September 2019 20:46
@lynn_laidlaw @PUNC19Laura @WeStudentNurse @KimYoun33934432 @jamesfm55 Very important to consider where the balance of power lies. Healthcare has a long medicalised model based history of holding onto that power. How can we ensure that the power is not taken from people & remains with them? #WeStNs

@PUNC14 @lynn_laidlaw @WeStudentNurse @KimYoun33934432 @jamesfm55 @LeanneHPatrick Absolutely. I think @lynn_laidlaw has issue with the language being used more than the need to improve patient care?
