#WeNurses - Thursday 26th September 2019 8pm (GMT Standard Time) Staff development - #SouthamptonChildrensHospitalInCharge

If you haven't joined in a tweet chat before it's very simple.    Here's a guide

 Chat Details

Hosted by WeNurses using #WeNurses

This chat is guest hosted by @SotonChildHosp

On 26th September Southampton Children's Hospital will be taking over the WeNurses Twitter account for the day:

Southampton Children’s Hospital is the sixth-largest children’s hospital in the country and one of only four which provides all specialist services on one site and employs over 600 nurses. Staff treat 150,000 children from across the UK every year, including 25,000 who pass through the emergency department, 25,000 admitted for inpatient care and 100,000 at outpatient appointments. The hospital is part of University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust (UHS), one of the largest acute teaching trusts in the country, and provides specialist paediatric services including cardiac, cancer, neurosciences and intensive care to patients across southern England, the Channel Islands and other parts of the UK.

We are really excited as this is the very first time that an organisation has taken charge of WeNurses and we are really looking forward to a fab day of tweeting .... furthermore on that same evening Southhampton Children's Hospital will also be running a #WeNurses tweetchat as @WeNurses ! The focus of the tweetchat will be 'Staff Development":

Staff development is a big focus at Southampton Children’s Hospital and something we are always looking to improve and develop. Working within the NHS is incredibly demanding and we are always exploring new ways to recognise, empower and retain our staff.

Our Divisional Head of Nursing and Professions, Louisa, will be answering questions and discussing the most pressing talking points around staff development. We'd love for you to join us.

Please do join in the tweetchat and don't forget to also give #SouthamptonChildrensHospitalInCharge a tweet or two throughout the day.

RT @WeNurses: Ok first question. What is the key to developing good nurses? #WeNurses #nurselife #nurses @Sotonchildhosp https://t.co/UO1cJ…
@AgencyNurse
26 September 2019 20:07
@WeNurses @Sotonchildhosp my thoughts are that it has to be done in partnership .... there is no point sending a nurse for development if they don't want to go ... if people have an interest in something then build on that #WeNurses

@dianelewis6039 @WeNurses @Sotonchildhosp agree i think communication is a great start ... but needs to be communication from all sides #WeNurses
@AgencyNurse
26 September 2019 20:13
Really excellent point .... was only having this conversation today with someone ... it's incredibly hard to do in the current climate but in order to grow and retain nurses it's so vital #WeNurses https://twitter.com/kelsbels1905/status/1177298460904775682

@WeNurses @Sotonchildhosp Hello #wenurses peeps! Having positive learning environment Reflection/supervision Coaching & mentoring Acknowledging social aspects of learning as important as formal Ed Role models Focus on values based learning, not just competencies Development of self-motivated learning??
@AgencyNurse
26 September 2019 20:14
I remember doing early and later shifts and the bit where the shifts crossed over was for staff development .... there was something going on most days ... i think we need to create time somehow #WeNurses
@WeNurses
26 September 2019 20:14
Some great responses already, thanks for tuning in. Second question, what are the biggest gripes you hear from nurses around development? #WeNurses #SCHInCharge #Nursing https://t.co/3LttgSNv2s
@WeNurses
26 September 2019 20:15
@reboverend_RNc @Sotonchildhosp Love these Rebecca! It’s so important that we take all of these into consideration if we want to train competent, compassionate nurses #WeNurses
@AgencyNurse
26 September 2019 20:15
Love the addition of self motivated learning here .... think that is the holy grail ... surely thats a key attribution of a "happy nurse" ? #WeNurses https://twitter.com/reboverend_RNc/status/1177300153016844288

@AgencyNurse Spot on! Have encouraged some wards to use this pattern during orientation so that learning can occur that involves all new starters as much as possible- gives parity in learning opps and social time to get to know people #WeNurses

@WeNurses @Sotonchildhosp Definitely good role models and having a positive open learning culture #wenurses

26 September 2019 20:17
@AgencyNurse @dianelewis6039 @Sotonchildhosp Great points! ‘hello my name is’ is a great initiative by Dr Kate Granger to ensure we involve patients in our communication. We also have a patient involvement group at @Sotonchildhosp to include patient views as early as possible to make them part of decision making. #WeNurses

That they don't get any .. that there's no time, that they didn't get the development they wanted / needed #WeNurses https://twitter.com/WeNurses/status/1177300347863412737
@WeNurses
26 September 2019 20:18

@reboverend_RNc
26 September 2019 20:19
@AgencyNurse Are we at risk of abusing this though...so many do a great job but coming in on days off, staying after a night shift etc to complete paperwork/feedback models that this is acceptable way of managing workload. We must find ways of making it easier to support learners #WeNurses
@WeNurses
26 September 2019 20:20
@schoolnurse17 Great feedback. Time is always an issue in the NHS. At @Sotonchildhosp we make a conscious effort to prioritise development because we believe it’s the key to retaining good nurses. #WeNurses
@AgencyNurse
26 September 2019 20:21
@reboverend_RNc no not really .... surely the increased workload would eventually lead to burnout .. not good for mentors or staff development .... it's a bit of a catch 22 #WeNurses
@reboverend_RNc
26 September 2019 20:21
@alimully @WeNurses Sometimes not even enough time to manage essential training. Being expected to do this in own time is wrong and nurses need to stop doing it! #WeNurses

@AgencyNurse
26 September 2019 20:24
@clarepricedowd do you think that we forget that development and learning doesn't have to take place in the classroom ?? I have learnt so much whilst on shift from colleagues over the years #WeNurses
@reboverend_RNc
26 September 2019 20:24
@WeNurses Not enough: Time Funding Support after courses to apply learning Recognition that personal development has occurred Recognition by manager that learning whilst working needs to be supported with helpful rotas to give time for study Supervision to explore ethics #WeNurses
@CalvinMoorley
26 September 2019 20:25
A lot of hospitals now ask universities to deliver the CPD courses onsite so nurses only get like 1/2 a day then rush back to ward. I don’t think this works well for the ‘student’ as needs time to assimilate information and knowledge shared #wenurses
@WeNurses
26 September 2019 20:25
Third question in our TweetChat.... How can we improve appraisals in the NHS? #WeNurses #nurse #nursing #SCHInCharge https://t.co/fQo7gQ0GNu
@AgencyNurse
26 September 2019 20:25
wow this sounds fab ... how do you ensure that people don't get called back to their wards to fill staffing gaps ? #WeNurses https://twitter.com/amli256/status/1177302838420082695
@alimully
26 September 2019 20:26
@reboverend_RNc @WeNurses I get frustrated by the definition of essential training, most training we do is essential as it improves and enhances pt care. As a profession we have a set no of cpd hours we have to do so imo these should be given as study time #wenurses
@reboverend_RNc
26 September 2019 20:27
@AgencyNurse Agree. Hardest to do but gives greatest payback! That comes though encouraging learners to strive for excellence, value their comprehension & becoming autonomous and lots of feedback ?? and opps to try new things #WeNurses
@AgencyNurse
26 September 2019 20:27
I have always felt that appraisals feel a bit like being summoned to the headmasters office ... think it needs to be a two way street ... perhaps simple things like cake and coffee ?? Make it friendly so that the person can get the most out of it #WeNurses https://twitter.com/WeNurses/status/1177303219179008000
@CalvinMoorley
26 September 2019 20:27
@clarepricedowd @AgencyNurse But this needs to be underpinned by evidence base IMO #wenurses

26 September 2019 20:28
@WeNurses The trust owes me X study day X course X funding .... the automatic assumption that the Trust is wholly responsible for an individual's development #WeNurses
@AgencyNurse
26 September 2019 20:29
yes indeed ... but with the right skills this can be self directed study sometimes ... there is a place for classroom .. but equally learning can take place in other settings #WeNurses https://twitter.com/CalvinMoorley/status/1177303806935228416
@alimully
26 September 2019 20:29
@WeNurses They shouldn't be yearly, they should seen as a continuous thing. How many people actually get it out and review it during the year? Also they are pointless unless your employer can develop you. #WeNurses

@WeNurses
26 September 2019 20:31

26 September 2019 20:31
Fab - so an organisational approach #WeNurses https://twitter.com/amli256/status/1177304555626872832
@reboverend_RNc
26 September 2019 20:32
@alimully @WeNurses Agree. There is essential training which is focusing on patient & organisational safety- then the skills gained to be able to perform job to meet service needs. This is separate from DEVELOPMENT which is about furthering knowledge and skills- separate things! #WeNurses
@CalvinMoorley
26 September 2019 20:33
@WeNurses It’s because some areas use this as a tick box exercise with no real meaning that it’s for development. An experienced appraiser will understand this but some use it to highlight shortcomings and not how to develop to halt these #WeNurses
@coxc41
26 September 2019 20:33
@WeNurses @AgencyNurse @dianelewis6039 @Sotonchildhosp Definitely agree communication is key from everyone involved with every patient.#WeNurses

26 September 2019 20:33

26 September 2019 20:38
@AgencyNurse @CalvinMoorley We have new more in-depth paperwork with training not on the paperwork but how to do a good appraisal run by HR. We review and develop regularly and get feedback from those involved. #WeNurses
@reboverend_RNc
26 September 2019 20:38
@WeNurses By making them about learning and not performing. By making them about the person not the organisation. By making them recognise personal and professional development. By acknowledging that learning is not linear. By making them incremental in small achievable reviews #WeNurses
@CalvinMoorley
26 September 2019 20:39
@AgencyNurse @WeNurses But also workshops should be held for staff to understand the appraisal process a whole organisation approach. This may eliminate the fair of feeling summoned #WeNurses simple stuff like how to write a SMART objective
@AgencyNurse
26 September 2019 20:39
@WeNurses @CalvinMoorley thats really reassuring to here ... it's so important that its a productive and positive experience for all sides #WeNurses (again not always easy to achieve)

@reboverend_RNc
26 September 2019 20:43
@CalvinMoorley @AgencyNurse @clarepricedowd Yes! Wouldn’t it be even better if that could be done whilst in clinical area... plan and prepare teaching, use technology to search for evidence, compares and contrast with another guideline... using your mobile?!. Model research use in action #WeNurses
@AgencyNurse
26 September 2019 20:44
Wow another fab question ... not sure i have an answer to this one ... perhaps some of it is preparation and some of it experience and some of it is knowing you can ask for help ? #Wenurses https://twitter.com/WeNurses/status/1177307018388025350

26 September 2019 20:44

@reboverend_RNc @sandyra1961 @Sotonchildhosp So true! Strong relationships outside of work make for great working relationships which is why we organise social events as often as possible at SCH. #WeNurses

@WeNurses I think you need to be appreciated and valued. The little things count my sister works for a trust that wanted more days of the nurses so changed their shift pattern no consultation lots of nurses left #WeNurses also look at the watergate scandal drinking on duty

@WeNurses At @UHSFT, we’re very supportive of staff members who wish to progress their career along the nursing leadership route or onto specialist and advanced practice roles. Academic courses are available to support both of these opportunities via high education institutes.?? #WeNurses
