This chat is guest hosted by @UKHSA

In response to the Bercow report, the government announced its ambition to half the number of children who do not achieve the minimum communication, language and literacy goals by the end of reception year by 2028. Investment from the government in  the Social Mobility Action Plan, “Unlocking Talent, Fulfilling Potential”, has created opportunities for health professionals and early years staff to update their knowledge and support families to give their children the support they need.

Public Health England in their role offering professional leadership and guidance for public health nurses are leading a programme of work including the provision of training in speech, language and communication, publication of guidance to support SLC pathways and the testing of an SLC assessment tool to use alongside ASQ at aged 2.

All those working with families with young children can support them to build on their strengths and identify emerging difficulties. There are some key messages that are useful for everyone to use in their work with families including:

  • delivering the key messages of Chat, Play, Read using resources such as those from the DfE  Hungry LittleMinds campaign and the BBC Tiny Happy People resources
  • using daily routines and everyday interactions as the context for modelling language

This #WeMDT tweetchat in conduction with Public Health England aims to explore how we all have a role in supporting children’s speech, language and communication

@WeNurses We need it first and foremost to gain informed consent. Secondly without it, how do we effectively educate ppl we work with. Thirdly on a systems level we need it to prevent errors, most healthcare errors boil down to one thing, poor communication #wemdt
