#WeNurses - Thursday 24th October 2019 8pm (GMT Standard Time) Being a newly qualified nurse

If you haven't joined in a tweet chat before it's very simple.    Here's a guide

 Chat Details

Hosted by WeNurses using #WeNurses

As student nurses enter their third year thoughts, naturally, turn to being a qualified nurses and the realities of practising as a qualified nurse: whether or not the experience will match ideals and aspirations, as well as the fear that both knowledge and clinical skills could fall short.

Many just about to qualify and newly qualified nurses have anxieties, as, indeed, we all have in days gone by. These anxieties can effect a newly qualified nurses confidence and progress so it is vital that they are articulated and newly qualified nurses are supported throughout the transition from student to qualified nurse. Health Education England (2019) state "Nurses and midwives are not expected to be competent in everything. After a short period of being supervised you gradually take on more responsibilities until you are working as a fully autonomous practitioner. The most important thing to remember is that you should speak up if you don’t feel supported."

With all this in mind, the aim of the chat is to explore the post-qualifying expectations of current student nurses by addressing the following key issues:

  • What are the main anxieties of a newly qualified nurse?
  • How does the reality of being a qualified nurse match the expectations that people have?
  • What support is available to newly qualified nurses?
  • What should newly qualified nurses do if they find themselves overwhelmed?
  • How can each of us support newly qualified nurses in our teams?

@WeNurses Hi! I qualify in three months and i think I’m most anxious about not being able to handle the workload and juggle everything #WeNurses
@AgencyNurse
24 October 2019 20:07

@WeNurses #WeNurses I think the overall anxiety is about letting the patients down or providing sub-standard care especially when needing support to do meds, plan care, order tests, complete assessments on new systems & not knowing who to turn to & who can support you
@AgencyNurse
24 October 2019 20:13

@WeNurses Hi everyone my name is Harriet, I qualified 23 years ago and I still have to ask questions every day - my top bit of advice is: if you don’t know ask, it’s never a stupid question and that’s one of the ways we develop our knowledge and skills as nurses #WeNurses

@hnbarker
24 October 2019 20:26
#WeNurses we had a #SchwartzRound today with FY1 doctors reflecting on their first few months - made me reflect on how important those first few months are to all new starters especially NQNs - mine are regularly invited to tell me how it is - we can only learn if we understand
@AgencyNurse
24 October 2019 20:26
I have to admit that as a NQN i was quite scared a lot of the time ... however it was also a very exciting and fun time ... consolidating skills, being part of a team, learning new things, being part of something amazing #WeNurses
@XMcVey
24 October 2019 20:26
@WeNurses There’s so much support out there! Each trust is a little different but start with finding out what preceptorship you should expect, who your preceptor is. We have clinical supervision for our rotation nurses, work clinically when we can with our NQ, do breakfast clubs #WeNurses

@lucy_uo
24 October 2019 20:28
@WeNurses I've seen that some hospitals have special badges for NQNs. Although I'm a bit on the fence about the idea, because it might make people under judge them (or choose not to get help from them) #WeNurses
