This chat is guest hosted by @HeatherHenry4

Tweetchat:      Student Nurse Leadership: What’s Your Story?

Date:                  1stJuly 2020 at 8 p.m.

Organised by:  Natalie Elliott, Year 2 Nursing Student (Adult field) at the Glasgow Caledonian University

Guest Hosts:   @HeatherHenry4– a well-known nurse entrepreneur and member of @WeGPNs . Her background is in primary care and respiratory nursing.

Background:

Following on from our October 2019 tweetchat,“Can students really be leaders?”, we decided to progress onto how we can unearth our strengths and personal style as leaders, along with finding role models and mentors who inspire us.

As part of their standards for pre-registration nursing education, the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC, 2018)highlight leadership a key proficiency for future nurses. Student nurses are encouraged to learn and practice their leadership skills from the start of their courses. The Council of Deans of Health’s #150leaders programme, in conjunction with the Burdett Trust, talks about students being their authentic selves in order to lead by sharing their personal stories to create their‘unique selling points’ and leadership style.

Discussion:

So, this chat is about appreciate our strengths and personal style and about finding role models and mentors that can inspire us. Focused themes include:

  1. Who is your leadership role-model: either a nurse or other professional? Why did you choose them?
  2. What is your unique selling point or strong quality that you think will help you to lead?
  3. If you were given a ‘leadership tool belt’ what essential ‘tools’ would you like to be in it?
  4. Think of a time when your leadership didn’t go to plan. What did you learn?
  5. Can patient & community leaders help us to deliver person – centered care? How?
  6. Final Thoughts?

@WeStudentNurse How can you facilitate leadership when personally delivering hands on care to patients? Are there ways to achieve this and maintain best practice and the patient at the centre? #WeStNs

@WeStudentNurse People who are humble, passionate and try to facilitate opportunity for all they work with inspire me. To me that has to be a central foundation to any leadership role, strategy, logical thinking and systematic approaches work well in partnership with this foundation.#WeStNs

@WeStudentNurse Yes, It can leave you open to neglecting yourself. You could potentially end up "too involved" and lose your objectivity in situations. Sensitivity is a great skill, but it's definitely one to keep in check. My advice would be to regularly reflect and seek supervision. #WeStns.
