The shocking treatment across the world of Black Asian and Minority Ethnic people such as George Floyd, Ahmaund Arbery and Breona Taylor, coupled with COVID-19, shot is that injustice, discrimination, racism and inequality is something faced by Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic people everyday.

This TweetChat wishes to explore our acknowledgement that being non-racist is not the same as anti-racist and how we can be better allies.

@wehcmanagers Hello I'm Lyse, Head of Ops for Children's and Families at @mpftnhs and also member of @proud2bOps. Honoured to be co-facilitating tonight's tweet chat with @JenJenHutton who is tweeting as @wehcmanagers tonight #WeHCMs

@Lyse_e @mpftnhs @proud2bOps @JenJenHutton Hello! Welcome! #WeHCMs
@wehcmanagers
30 June 2020 20:04
@julia_wilson70 Hello! Having trouble replying to your message. #WeHCMs
@wehcmanagers
30 June 2020 20:05
Question 1: How have the recent events and BLM protests made you reflect on your stance on this issue as a leader in health and care? #WeHCMs https://t.co/EoKqHafYdb
@wehcmanagers
30 June 2020 20:07
@amenbhagbe Hello! good evening! #WeHCMs
@evelyn_prodger
30 June 2020 20:08
@wehcmanagers I think it has really made me think about how I behave and role model inclusivity, it has made me think more deeply about the layers of racism, explicit and implicit that can lurk in the workplace #WeHCMs
@Lyse_e
30 June 2020 20:08
@wehcmanagers Q1 For me it has reminded me of some of the great learning from @TracieJolliff on the #bevanprog in relation to my position of privileged and how much of that I take for granted, and my role in being an ally for others without this privilege. #weHCMs
@evelyn_prodger
30 June 2020 20:08
@wehcmanagers Also made me talk more openly to my team members about the reality of their experience #WeHCMs
@wehcmanagers
30 June 2020 20:09
So important to start having conversations with people. #WeHCMs https://twitter.com/evelyn_prodger/status/1278042805726851073
@evelyn_prodger
30 June 2020 20:09
@Lyse_e @wehcmanagers @TracieJolliff I think privilege is a great word, makes me think more dynamically about this #WeHCMs
@wehcmanagers
30 June 2020 20:11
@evelyn_prodger Same here. I think I have been too passive. #WeHCMs
@evelyn_prodger
30 June 2020 20:11
@SueGreenwood15 I agree Sue, made me think about how and where it is happening within society and not just focus on the local, as leaders and managers we have a responsibility within the bigger picture #WeHCMs
@wehcmanagers
30 June 2020 20:13
Even in just a few short weeks I have come to better understand what privilege is and how I was blinded to how 'in' the system I am. #WeHCMs https://twitter.com/evelyn_prodger/status/1278043116801527810
@julia_wilson70
30 June 2020 20:13
@wehcmanagers I agree, I think it has made me reflect on my position as a leader #wehcms

@evelyn_prodger
30 June 2020 20:14
@wehcmanagers I think we have probably all been in that place, as leaders if we believe we have good inclusive working practices it is easy to be complacent and not look from different perspectives #WeHCMs
@wehcmanagers
30 June 2020 20:14
@julia_wilson70 What reflections or learning have you been able to apply - or is it too early? #WeHCMs
@wehcmanagers

This position of openness, honesty and acknowledgement that we can do better and moving on is so important. #WeHCMs https://twitter.com/JonRoustonSLT/status/1278044478071361537

#WeHCMs Racism is prohibited in the world as a whole
@evelyn_prodger
30 June 2020 20:17
@wehcmanagers We have to be open and honest with ourselves before we can authentically challenge others #WeHCMs

RT @wehcmanagers: Don't forget to use the #WeHCMs please - would hate to miss a valuable insight from you this evening. #WeHCMs
@Lyse_e
30 June 2020 20:19
@evelyn_prodger @wehcmanagers I agree, holding the mirror up can be uncomfortable and can force us to accept some difficult truths #weHCMs
@wehcmanagers
30 June 2020 20:19
Totally agree. Without fully understanding our own knowledge (lack there of) and developing a greater empathy for the inequalities faced by friends and colleagues its tough to 'call it out' in others. Need to remember that we can no longer avert our gaze now though. #WeHCMs https://twitter.com/evelyn_prodger/status/1278045083049381890
@wehcmanagers
30 June 2020 20:20
Question 2: How d you think racial inequality 'shows up' within the services you manage or have experienced? #WeHCMs https://t.co/GEdRuNdogC
@evelyn_prodger
30 June 2020 20:21
@Lyse_e @wehcmanagers True, if we as leaders and managers are not prepared to do it in an honest and transparent way then we are not role modelling effectively or being authentic leaders #WeHCMs
@julia_wilson70
30 June 2020 20:22
@wehcmanagers My trust @kmptnhs are very proactive and supportive and I am learning every day #wehcms
@wehcmanagers
30 June 2020 20:22
@amenbhagbe It is, and yet, the struggle and oppression is still so real. As communities of privilege we are keen to learn and do better. To see the micro aggressions in ourselves and others and to stop it. #WeHCMs
@wehcmanagers
30 June 2020 20:23
@julia_wilson70 @kmptnhs Are there any resources you can share with us here? #WeHCMs
@Lyse_e
30 June 2020 20:23
@wehcmanagers Q2 I think the 'snowy white peaks' of the NHS demonstrate that it does show up, whether we want to acknowledge it or not. #weHCMs
@evelyn_prodger
30 June 2020 20:24
@wehcmanagers Q2. That is a tough one, I think it is easy to see when it is overt but often it is the less obvious accepted norms and not challenged embedded practices that are more difficult, they often go unchallenged because they are just how things are done here #WeHCMs
@wehcmanagers
30 June 2020 20:24
@Lyse_e Do you think the tide is changing? Is the 'system' being too slow or is that change being held back or prevented do you think? #WeHCMs
@evelyn_prodger
30 June 2020 20:26
@wehcmanagers @Lyse_e I think it is too slow and the diversity of the frontline is not reflected fully through all levels of health and social care #WeHCMs
@Lyse_e
30 June 2020 20:26
@wehcmanagers I can only hope more of us thinking and talking about these issues will move us forward. I would sense progress is not swift enough. #weHCMs
@wehcmanagers
30 June 2020 20:27
@evelyn_prodger Its really hard to see the micro levels of racism and in equality isn't it? I've been listening to some podcasts aghast at some behaviours that are counterproductive even though that is not something I set out to do/maintain. Behaviours and attitudes can change though! #WeHCMs

RT @wehcmanagers: @julia_wilson70 @kmptnhs Are there any resources you can share with us here? #WeHCMs
@HJTucker
30 June 2020 20:28
@wehcmanagers The events have been a sharp reminder of not to be complacent. To work proactively to continue to build respect and recognition. #wehcms. @CommHospUK
@evelyn_prodger
30 June 2020 20:28
@julia_wilson70 @wehcmanagers @kmptnhs That is so good to hear, do they have a way of facilitating your learning that others could learn from? #WeHCMs
@Lyse_e
30 June 2020 20:28
@JonRoustonSLT @wehcmanagers I agree, I'm trying to listen and learn, doing that through some reading/audibles at the moment #weHCMs
@wehcmanagers
30 June 2020 20:29
Do you think that in the new fast ways of getting things done in COVID-era some of that can be applied to changes in the make up of the system? How can we accelerate change and improvement? #WeHCMs https://twitter.com/evelyn_prodger/status/1278047322572808194
@wehcmanagers
30 June 2020 20:30
@julia_wilson70 @evelyn_prodger @kmptnhs @SarahFeather10 @nataadams80 @YDR1 Thank you! #WeHCMs
@evelyn_prodger
30 June 2020 20:30
@Lyse_e @wehcmanagers Do you think that awareness of this issue rises in priority when there is a public outcry and then slides back into complacency? It feels like there is a real commitment to behaviour change this time but we need to find ways of sustaining the new ones #WeHCMs
@Lyse_e
30 June 2020 20:30
#WeHCMS I think we need to hear more from colleagues within the NHS from black and minority ethnic backgrounds in leadership positions or those aspiring to leadership and amplify those voices in our own leadership community.
@evelyn_prodger
30 June 2020 20:31
@wehcmanagers I would hope so but it needs our commitment as leaders and managers to keep this high on the priority list and drive forward #WeHCMs
@wehcmanagers
30 June 2020 20:33
@evelyn_prodger @Lyse_e Somehow this feels different? I have never heard discourse, before George Floyd for example, about White people actively recognizing that their privilege is part of the solution. #WeHCMs
@evelyn_prodger
30 June 2020 20:33
@wehcmanagers I know, but if we can start to see these things in ourselves and our workplaces then that should enable incremental change, if we can use our change management learning from COVID-19 even better #WeHCMs

Question 3: Do you think that White privilege is acknowledged and discussed sufficiently in your work place? Supplementary Question: Why do you think that is? #WeHCMs https://t.co/IrVvrWpWuy
@wehcmanagers
30 June 2020 20:35
@evelyn_prodger ^nods vehemently^ #WeHCMs
@evelyn_prodger
30 June 2020 20:35
@wehcmanagers @Lyse_e I wonder how much of the different is because the world the messages are landing in is different, COVID-19 may prove to be helpful, it is a definite leveller and kindness, compassion and social responsibility are being more openly discussed #WeHCMs
@evelyn_prodger
30 June 2020 20:38
@JonRoustonSLT @Lyse_e @wehcmanagers It is really difficult, but we have make it okay for us and our teams to be open and say it is okay to want to learn more and find ways to support that learning #WeHCMs
@evelyn_prodger
30 June 2020 20:38
@Lyse_e @wehcmanagers I am not sure we will ever know but if it is a positive influence that is all for the good #WeHCMs
@Lyse_e
30 June 2020 20:39
@wehcmanagers Q3 No, I don't think it is. I wonder if the context of a rural county with low levels of ethnic diversity amplifies this and if it would be different if I worked in a more diverse community? However I do feel my organisation takes the issue seriously. #weHCMs
@wehcmanagers
30 June 2020 20:40
I'l start - I don't think White privilege has been acknowledged in my organisation. I think because we were trying to hide it, put it 'over there' so we could be diverse and inclusive. But there really is a way (emerging) that shows us White priviliege can be a + tool. #WeHCMs
@evelyn_prodger
30 June 2020 20:40
@YDR1 @julia_wilson70 @wehcmanagers @kmptnhs @SarahFeather10 @nataadams80 I think our strand was thinking in a broader way but so important to understand the impact on individuals within all of this, thank you for the reminder #WeHCMs
@evelyn_prodger

@YDR1 @julia_wilson70 @wehcmanagers @kmptnhs @SarahFeather10 @nataadams80 This is a door we must be united in keeping open #WeHCMs

30 June 2020 20:41
Similarly I am part of an organisation where BAME % representation is way below that of the general population or the NHS. I feel that is wrapped up in opportunity and education system before people even get to my place of work. #WeHCMs https://twitter.com/Lyse_e/status/1278050541025865728
@evelyn_prodger
30 June 2020 20:43
@wehcmanagers Shamefully, I don’t think the term is openly used nor recognised in many workplaces, for me this is one of the areas I am focusing some learning on #WeHCMs

30 June 2020 20:44
@YDR1 @julia_wilson70 @evelyn_prodger @wehcmanagers @kmptnhs @SarahFeather10 @nataadams80 That's a really important dimension for us to consider, the pandemic has really exposed inequalities in health outcomes as well as wider structural inequalities and has put a number of our colleagues at high risk. #weHCMs
@evelyn_prodger
30 June 2020 20:45
@YDR1 @julia_wilson70 @wehcmanagers @kmptnhs @SarahFeather10 @nataadams80 I really do believe truthful conversations (and I like the term) are such a positive way to learn and we need to encourage and facilitate them as leaders and managers #WeHCMs

30 June 2020 20:50
@nataadams80 @julia_wilson70 @evelyn_prodger @kmptnhs @SarahFeather10 @YDR1 It feels like recent events have been a catalyst to these conversations and shone a light on the issue. So out of an awful event has come some good? #WeHCMs

30 June 2020 20:56
@Emmsyjayne @wehcmanagers Or arguably it this can be viewed as the perfect environment to discuss it. White people have to stop relying on people of colour to educate us about what we/our ancestors/systems have done to oppress them. #wehcms

30 June 2020 20:59
@mhldnurse_amy @Emmsyjayne Yes! This. We need to enable ourselves into a position of better knowledge and empathy. Our BAME friends colleagues and peers are too much in pain and anguish to deal with our 'so what if...' questions. #WeHCMs.
