#WeStNs - Monday 21st September 2020 8pm (GMT Standard Time) The Emotional Connection (Using the VERA model)

If you haven't joined in a tweet chat before it's very simple.    Here's a guide

 Chat Details

Hosted by WeStudentNurse using #WeStNs

Background:

The VERA communication model is recognised as good practice when supporting a person who is living with dementia, the model utilises four steps (validation, emotion, reassurance and activity) to support engaging a person who may be presenting as anxious or confused. The model itself can be utilised to support in allowing you to make an emotional connection with the person to support in all aspects of care.

Discussion:

Focussed themes include:

1. Validation – How can we as nurses validate the experiences of a person living with dementia?

2. Emotion – What tools or skills do you feel support us connecting emotionally with the person?

3. Reassurance – Can you think of any other ways we could offer reassurance outside of verbal interaction?

4. Activity – What kind of activity could you engage a person in if you were based on a hospital ward?

5. Can you think of any other examples of communication models focussed on dementia?

@WeStudentNurse Depends on each person so you have to use your clinical judgement but using touch, holding someone’s hand for example. Also I don’t know if this counts as verbal interaction but using music that they like cause reassurance. Music is a powerful tool. #WeStNs

@WeStudentNurse Some nursing homes join together with nurseries. As someone who worked in a nursery previously I find this interesting. Children often don't think twice about just coming and chatting to someone they don't know, even little kids will just come and give you a hug or a toy #WeStNs
