#WeNurses - Thursday 28th January 2021 8:15pm (GMT Standard Time) Identifying and responding to violence against women

If you haven't joined in a tweet chat before it's very simple.    Here's a guide

 Chat Details

Hosted by WeNurses using #WeNurses

This chat is guest hosted by @LeanneHPatrick

In 2015 the United Nations General Assembly set a series of17 global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to be achieved by the year 2030.The SDGs are designed to be "a blueprint to achieve a better and more sustainable future for all". In response, UN member states develop their own strategies and aims to ensure the goals are met.

Number 5 on the SDG list is: Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls. In 2016, governments in England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland released strategies to end violence against women and girls. Each of these includes a clear responsibility for health services and staff to recognise and respond appropriately to signs of domestic abuse and disclosures of abuse, rape and sexual assault.

Across the UK a small number of gender based violence nursing teams and link/liaison nurses are working to translate global goals and national strategies into local policies and ways of working.

In this #WeNurses tweetchat we will be discussing your understanding of domestic abuse, current practices and how specialist nursing teams can help and support other nurses to develop their knowledge and confidence in recognising and responding to violence against women.

Note: Whilst these are issues that can also affect men, violence against women is both a cause and consequence of their inequality within society. The remit of this tweetchat is to focus on this particular issue.

Questions:

1)   What are some of the common or less common signs of domestic abuse?

2)   How confident do you feel responding to a disclosure of domestic abuse, rape or sexual assault?

3)   What do you understand about the role of referring to MARAC in supporting people experiencing high risk domestic abuse?

4)   Poll: Is there a specialist Gender Based Violence Nursing team or link/liaison Nurse in your Trust or service? (Yes/No/Not Sure)

5)   How might a Gender Based Violence Nurse or link/liaison nurse best help you or the service you work in?

6)   What kind of changes could you or the service you work in make to safeguard women who may be experiencing abuse and/or violence?

@WeNurses Over the top responses, heightened emotions both good & bad, withdrawal from services, clock watching, agitation when plans change, risky behaviours like drugs/alcohol/unsafe sex/partying. Downplaying injuries, lack of confidence, cut off from family/friends #WeNurses

@WeNurses Right now, as a student nurse early in my training, I’m not entirely sure on how to respond from a professional standpoint, but I know confidentiality, being non judgemental and having the patients best interest at the centre of how to support them is vital #WeNurses #lotstolearn
