Speech, language and communication in early childhood is fundamental to learning development and future outcomes. Early language skills are developed in early years, delays can affect life chances and opportunities for children.

The ability to communicate is a skill that starts early in life and continues across the life course. Whilst children develop at a different pace, there are key milestones in speech, language and communication (SLC) development. When these are not reached, they indicate that additional support may need to be offered to a young child and their parents or carers.

Some children may not get this support early enough, leading them to start school with SLC levels behind that of other children.

Approximately 10% of all children have long-term speech, language and communication needs (SLCN) In some areas of deprivation, more than 50% of children start school with SLC levels behind that of other children.

Through early identification of development needs and working in partnership with parents to support their child’s speech, language and communication skills, health visiting teams, speech and language therapists and early years practitioners can make a difference for children and help them to achieve their full potential.

The Social Mobility Action Plan aimed to improve life chances and potential; SLC is one of the key areas where we can make a difference if issues are identified early and children / families are supported;

Department of Education and Public Health England  in partnership, developed a programme of work to reduce inequalities in early speech, language and communication.

1.The provision of enhanced training for health visitors to identify SLCN and to support more appropriate / rapid referral

2.The development of guidance to support local areas to develop evidence based SLCN pathways

3.The development of a new Early Language Identification Measure (ELIM) and accompanying intervention

4.Delivery of training to support the ELIM roll out

Over the last 2 years we have focussed on Health Visitors and Early Years practitioners to support this work, together we can make a difference for children’s speech, language and communication to be ready to learn when starting school.

Questions

1.Why does SLC matter?

2.How can we promote the importance of language with parents – and do we think there are any barriers?

3. How can we identify delay early?

4.Is enough known about SLC amongst professionals?

5.  How can we role model the importance of ‘talking’ more?

6. How can we support integrated working to access local resources?

@WeNurses It sets them up for life, they will start to understand behaviours, right and wrong from an early age, we can support and mould. Helps with their pschological side as they can start expressing how they feel, not feeling frustated they can't communicate their needs #Wenurses
