Hello to all our amazing AHP colleagues! 


We thought that the best type of chat to hold for the first month of 2021 is one on self-care. Given the current climate we know that self-care might not be high up peoples agendas BUT this is the time when it's most important. It's heartbreaking to hear of so many healthcare professionals being pushed to breaking point (and further!) and as much as we all want to help it's crucial that we are taking care of ourselves too - mentally and physically.


We wanted to keep this chat super informal and basically just 'check in' with you all and see if there are any tips that we can share with one another.


Here are the questions:

1. What does self-care mean to you?

2. How do self-care practices contribute to your effectiveness as an Allied Health Professional?

3. What do you currently do to take care of yourself?

4. Do you think of self-care as a conscious or unconscious activity?

5. What one new thing are you going to implement in the next week as a result of this chat?

A1 I read a nice post by Sarah Ockwell-Smith rephrasing self-care as self-kindness, removing the notion that it is another thing one needs to 'do' which can add pressure and further feelings of guilt #WeAHPs

@WeAHPs For me, it’s taking time out just for me to do what I truly enjoy so that I feel physically and mentally happier. I think it’s important to do this regularly and not wait until I’m burnt out... although admittedly, I am really bad at leaving it a bit too late sometimes?? #WeAHPs

@WeAHPs Oh you know me! I'll share anything! General mood for me. I get grouchy, CBA attitude, neglected far too much. Also finishing work and not having the will to leave to go home. These are generally minor ones. More high end ones include feeling itchy inside and distant #weAHPs

@AliBooker_RD Certain bands i like are banned on my Spotify now. Linkin Park and Ben Howard being 2 examples. I overhung the lyrics. Classical music, Jack Johnson are 2 common ones for me. Or podcasts too #weAHPs

@WeAHPs I do meditation and yoga, both of which help me to regulate my ANS so when things get a bit hectic I am able to ground myself. Or at least try to. #WeAHPs

@WeAHPs Practice what we preach? Many of us as AHPs will talk to patients about self care and coping strategies. Its important we look after ourselves to be physically and mentally well to look after our patients. Even within the work place we have to practice self care #WeAHPs

@WeAHPs Without self care practices I quickly reach a burnout point where I feel overwhelmed and feel incompetent. Taking care of myself first allows me to care for patients to the best of my ability. How can you care for someone if you don’t care for yourself? #WeAHPs

@WeAHPs In my role, leading by example is definitely an important factor. There’s times to push hard & then there’s times to step back & breathe. If those I support see me practice what I preach I believe I’ll be a lot more effective in promoting their health & wellbeing too ?? #WeAHPs

I have to ensure I focus on what I'm doing and not try to take on too much. Im a mum so giving my daughter 100% of my attention when it is our time is important. Also not checking work emails when I'm not working! This crept up on me a bit last year & now I'm strict #Weahps

@WeAHPs Not enough! Always full of good intentions but so used to looking after everyone else. Its quite a struggle at the moment (living in lockdown) I do enjoy reading and crochet. Very lucky to live in an area with great nature walks also. A quiet glass of wine is also bliss! #WeAHPs

And I have developed a bit of a lockdown obsession with skincare - I tend to wake 10 mins before my daughter and really enjoy spending that time cleansing, toning, misting and all sorts of other attempts to hide my nearly 40 wrinkles ?? #Weahps

@WeAHPs #weAHPs I have no strategy really, I get very sore ankles and I just try position changes, I use magnesium cream and sometimes have to take painkillers. Sometimes its my head buzzing with all the stuff I need to put in my assignments. No answers but looking for some.

@WeAHPs At the moment, I have found having a routine has made such a difference. Factoring in a morning or lunchtime workout ???? Having lunch at the dining room table and not at my workstation. Cooking a nice meal in the evening. Then doing some painting or reading to unwind ?? #WeAHPs

Q4 link back to my tweet re. Q1. It should not be something you feel you have to 'do' or 'schedule' otherwise it becomes stressful and that definitely isnt the point, it could be a conscious decision to say a few kind words to yourself when things feel out of control #Weahps

@WeAHPs when you get overwhelmed you have to make a conscious decision to do it. Its easier to do when things are less fraught. Which is a bit of a contradiction really #WeAHPs

@WeAHPs #WeAHPs on reflection, pre 2020, I would not necessarily have recognised that the activities I enjoyed was self care. They were things I did outside of work for fun without realising the impact upon my work life and productivity/efficiency Now I am wiser...
