Social media and nursing Tweetchat 2: Exploring the impact that nurses & nursing are having on social media - challenges & solutions

Over the month of May WeNurses will be exploring social media and nursing.  We want start to understand the relationship that nurses and nursing has with social media and the impact that this is having so throughout May we will be holding tweetchats, sharing blogs, infographics and podcasts and running polls to really scrutinise where social media and nursing is.

We want to consider two main areas:

The impact that nurses & nursing are having on social media

And

The impact that social media is having on nurses & nursing

In each of these areas we want to explore  the positive impact but also explore the challenges we have faced and how we have overcome them.

This tweetchat will be exploring the impact that nurses & nursing are having on social media – the challenges and solutions and will ask the following questions:

  1. The impact that nurses are having on social media isn't always positive .... what are the challenges of nurses being on social media?
  2. How do we address any negative impact that nurses are having on social media? What can we do?
  3. Why should nurses continue to use social media even though it can present challenges?
  4. What creative examples of solutions have you seen when presented with challenges that have arisen through nurses use of social media?
  5. How can we ensure that the image of nursing continues to be a force for good within social media?

@WeNurses
13 May 2021 20:05
QUESTION 1 The impact that nurses are having on social media isn't always positive .... what are the challenges of nurses being on social media? #WeNurses https://t.co/W3svySY5aM
@AgencyNurse
13 May 2021 20:06
That we get it wrong and negatively impact the image of nursing #WeNurses https://twitter.com/WeNurses/status/1392918853571780612

also that we create an 'always on' approach to nursing .... and it becomes not the done thing to switch off #WeNurses

@WeNurses Lack of privacy. Having to uphold the reputation of all other nurses through their opinions and expressions ??? #wenurses
@wlasinclair
13 May 2021 20:09
@WeNurses Well I guess nurses don't always get it right on social media #wenurses
@CharleeB3010
13 May 2021 20:09
@WeNurses I feel like we are judged more harshly on here - there is a 'be careful you don't know who is looking' vibe especially with people who do not understand /use SoMe #wenurses
@AgencyNurse
13 May 2021 20:09
@paula_shiels I think thats a good thing that you have that awareness to stop and think #WeNurses
@AgencyNurse
13 May 2021 20:10
@aimzjordan @WeNurses privacy is a huge thing ... we have become accessible .. all the time #WeNurses
@WeNurses
13 May 2021 20:10
@CharleeB3010 @aimzjordan Hi both :) thanks for joining and sharing on #wenurses this eve!
@swan_anthony
13 May 2021 20:10
@WeNurses Sometimes I think it can come across in the wrong way that some nurses tweet and from then can cause some heated discussions which I don't think is healthy. But done in the right way then absolutely have these discussions like on tweetchat #WeNurses
@WeNurses

@CharleeB3010 @WeNurses does that mean that we are censored ? or even we censor ourselves ? #WeNurses
@CharleeB3010
13 May 2021 20:10
@WeNurses @aimzjordan Doh! Didn't say hi - sorry just jumped in #rubbish #wenurses
@WeNurses
13 May 2021 20:11
@J_Critcher welcome along Julie :) happy #wenurses'ing this eve!
@AgencyNurse
13 May 2021 20:11
@swan_anthony @WeNurses This is a really good point Anthony ... context isn't always apparent in social media #WeNurses
@aimzjordan
13 May 2021 20:12
@AgencyNurse @WeNurses Traceable too - one tag in or status update can tell somebody your exact location, place of work, colleagues place of work etc ?? scary! #wenurses
@CharleeB3010
13 May 2021 20:12
@AgencyNurse @WeNurses Yes - have been advised by seniors to be careful what I tweet and how it might be potentially construed. I suppose it is the same pressures that we put on celebs and there roles as SoMe users #wenurses
@J_Critcher
13 May 2021 20:12
@WeNurses #wenurses we also have a choice in regards to using social media
@AgencyNurse
13 May 2021 20:12
Yes this #WeNurses https://twitter.com/Helenski17/status/1392920663632064514
@AgencyNurse
13 May 2021 20:13
@aimzjordan @WeNurses so being mindful of setting is really important for us ... are we always aware of this ?? #WeNurses
@firogers3
13 May 2021 20:13
@WeNurses Personally been a positive experience but there is the expectation to be professional #WeNurses
@juliefulea
13 May 2021 20:13
@WeNurses Enjoying yourself seems to not always fit the public perception of what we should be doing #wenurses
@WeNurses
13 May 2021 20:14
the least positive thing I see now, that wasn't there 5+yrs ago, is all the sucking up to the status quo and not challenging it when it is very often top down rubbish that is so far behind or contrary to the reality 700,000 nurse face daily #wenurses
@CharleeB3010
13 May 2021 20:14
@juliefulea @WeNurses angels VS whores #wenurses
@AgencyNurse
13 May 2021 20:14
@CharleeB3010 @WeNurses gosh that puts you in a tricky position ! You are not alone though as your story is not uncommon #WeNurses
@WeNurses
13 May 2021 20:14
RT @AgencyNurse: @aimzjordan @WeNurses so being mindful of setting is really important for us ... are we always aware of this ?? #WeNurses
@CharleeB3010
13 May 2021 20:14
@AgencyNurse @WeNurses No and not just happened in nursing either #wenurses
@NRCUK
13 May 2021 20:15
the least positive thing I see now, that wasn't there 5+yrs ago, is all the sucking up to the status quo and not challenging it when it is very often top down rubbish that is so far behind or contrary to the reality 700,000 nurse face daily #wenurses

13 May 2021 20:15
QUESTION 2 How do we address any negative impact that nurses are having on social media? What can we do? #WeNurses https://t.co/bisv32s12P
@AgencyNurse
13 May 2021 20:15
And rightly so .... really important that we are professional ... however what does professional mean ? #WeNurses https://twitter.com/firogers3/status/1392920975231029253
@WeNurses
13 May 2021 20:16
Yes absolutely ... balance is key #WeNurses https://twitter.com/steffieg777/status/1392921158312501248
@aimzjordan
13 May 2021 20:16
@AgencyNurse @WeNurses Maybe the nurses who get disciplined for calling in sick and then being tagged by a friend on a night out aren't ???? I've seen a couple of colleagues in the past making big mistakes! #wenurses
@Helenski17
13 May 2021 20:16
@WeNurses Nurses in the past have been scared to use social media and are fearful of what they put on. This is definitely improving ?? #WeNurses
@AgencyNurse
13 May 2021 20:16
#WeNurses :D https://twitter.com/lireland197/status/1392921604569583633
@CharleeB3010
13 May 2021 20:17
@WeNurses That suggests that nurses are the problem - it is where people choose to air their dirty laundry or make comments, there is a chance that this imagery harks back to angelic nursing vibes that are unrealistic #wenurses
@NRCUK
13 May 2021 20:17
@WeNurses Same as in any other space, role model and be professional, supportive and respectful and think before "you open your mouth" - as a starter :) #wenurses
@AgencyNurse
13 May 2021 20:17
For me i feel it's all about education ... lets take a balanced approach, give nurses the skills and confidence to use this wonderful tool #WeNurses https://twitter.com/WeNurses/status/1392921374759456776
@CharleeB3010
13 May 2021 20:18
@aimzjordan @AgencyNurse @WeNurses This happens in other professions too not just nursing #wenurses
@steffieg777
13 May 2021 20:18
@WeNurses I think it is important to reach out and show support. We need to adapt to SoMe as this can be a great means of support and sharing. A nurse at my hospital had a very negative response to a tweet and I sought her out to talk it through #wenurses
@AgencyNurse
13 May 2021 20:18
yes and my worry is that will become the expectation .... how do we strike a work life balance ? #WeNurses https://twitter.com/juliefulea/status/1392921893406224386
@Helenski17
13 May 2021 20:19
@WeNurses I think we need to start at university- if we can get good practice embedded then this will help. We need more universities to to embrace use of social media...this is my mission #WeNurses
@AgencyNurse
13 May 2021 20:19
Agree i have seen a huge rise in confidence in social media use and that's amazing #WeNurses https://twitter.com/Helenski17/status/1392921738296582148
@WeNurses
13 May 2021 20:19
This is wonderful .... support eachother #WeNurses https://twitter.com/steffieg777/status/1392922294251671557
@aimzjordan
13 May 2021 20:20
@CharleeB3010 @AgencyNurse @WeNurses Most definitely, but way to let an already short staffed night team down! #wenurses
@swan_anthony
13 May 2021 20:20
@WeNurses I think we can reply and be supportive and positive but ultimately now I think how to use social media needs to be part of nurse training #WeNurses
@firogers3
13 May 2021 20:20
@AgencyNurse Simplistic answer - voicing opinions in an articulate respectful manner with non offensive language as you would do if face to face. Why should it be different on social media? #WeNurses
@CharleeB3010
13 May 2021 20:20
@AgencyNurse See this is different for me, I am not in work mode but I use SoMe to flex the nursing networking /academic muscles I don't get to whilst I am on the shop floor #wenurses
@AgencyNurse
13 May 2021 20:20
Yep THIS > #WeNurses https://twitter.com/firogers3/status/1392922701640126468
@CharleeB3010
13 May 2021 20:21
@aimzjordan @AgencyNurse @WeNurses Isn't it just! #wenurses
@AgencyNurse
13 May 2021 20:22
@CharleeB3010 and perhaps that is the crux of the matter ... every person is different and we should understand that every nurse will use social media differently and support them to use it in the way that works for them #WeNurses Not right or wrong here :)
@J_Critcher
13 May 2021 20:22
@Helenski17 @WeNurses #wenurses I agree Helen have undertaken many sessions talking about the positives of using social media there is still hesitancy but will bring my account up and share..
@AgencyNurse
13 May 2021 20:23
@michekawa @WeNurses oh my goodness - i am so sorry to hear this #WeNurses
@HuggablyGothic
13 May 2021 20:23
@WeNurses I think we have to learn to differentiate between not approving of what some nurses say or do, and nurses bringing the profession into disrepute....and avoid dog piling on them #WeNurses
@mikeythenurse
13 May 2021 20:23
@WeNurses The challenge is when nurses bring some of the toxic aspects of nursing culture through into their social media ie blaming/criticising patients, racism etc #WeNurses aren't always positive role models
@NRCUK
13 May 2021 20:23
@AgencyNurse change has to start somewhere, even a chat in the kitchen can start a huge change, then "suddenly" 100,000 nurses are tweeting... well done for your hugely respected part in that change :) #wenurses
@aimzjordan
13 May 2021 20:24
@Helenski17 @WeNurses 100% agree. Student nurses should be aware of the lack of privacy on social media and how to protect themselves for personal safety. But also not to scaremonger. We only ever heard warnings at uni about social media and ways to be struck off #wenurses
@AgencyNurse
13 May 2021 20:24
@HuggablyGothic @WeNurses yes disagreeing does not equate to unprofessionalism #WeNurses
@WeNurses
13 May 2021 20:25
QUESTION 3 Why should nurses continue to use social media even though it can present challenges? #WeNurses https://t.co/KRzR69ZAUV
@AgencyNurse
13 May 2021 20:25
@mikeythenurse @WeNurses and that's sad to see .... so what do we do about it ? #WeNurses
@J_Critcher
13 May 2021 20:25
@WeNurses #wenurses use of tools that @AgencyNurse has shared , maybe the teach a nurse to tweet Tuesday could make a return
@AgencyNurse
13 May 2021 20:25
Oooh yes we have not shared any in a while ! #WeNurses https://twitter.com/J_Critcher/status/1392923892172345354
@CharleeB3010
13 May 2021 20:25
@AgencyNurse @HuggablyGothic @WeNurses And yet people think it is, and that you are not playing as part of the team. We grow and we innovate with discussion and challenge #wenurses
@mikeythenurse
13 May 2021 20:26
@WeNurses When we see toxic nursing culture coming through on social media it's our job to point out the negative aspects of, not only to highlight it to the poster but also to show that not all nurses approve of such toxicity #WeNurses
@CharleeB3010
13 May 2021 20:26
@AgencyNurse Exactly. We all do this for different reasons. #wenurses
@HuggablyGothic
13 May 2021 20:26
@WeNurses As in all forums, we need to avoid ad hominem attacks and learn to challenge the opinion, not the person. And to differentiate between someone making a "-ist" or "-phobic" comment and labelling the person a " -ist" or "-phobe". #WeNurses
@WeNurses
13 May 2021 20:26
@AgencyNurse @HuggablyGothic Isn't there a blog out there about that "kindly disagreeing" by ...oh... you :) http://teresachinn.co.uk/kindly-disagreeing/ #wenurses
@AgencyNurse
13 May 2021 20:27
Because it gives us access to a huge people resource ! It can aid reflection It's useful for CPD And you only have to look at yesterdays #IND2021 to see how it can positively impact the image of nursing #WeNurses https://twitter.com/WeNurses/status/1392923867165904905
@firogers3

@WeNurses #wenurses sharing of good practice,building networks,keeping up to date . I call it a quick win as information is instant on here eg policy
@mikeythenurse
13 May 2021 20:27
@WeNurses Nurses are the frontline, we see the impacts of unjust social policy on health, of health inequities etc. Our voices can be used to amplify the voices and experiences of others who need to be heard or have their stories shared #WeNurses
@AgencyNurse
13 May 2021 20:27
@firogers3 @WeNurses like you :D #WeNurses
@NRCUK
13 May 2021 20:27
@WeNurses because the ability to connect, share and learn to improve practice and caring and patient experience hugely outways any negatives!!! #wenurses
@Jeanette_Ren
13 May 2021 20:28
@WeNurses #WeNurses social media allows like minded individuals to connect and share best practice
@WeNurses

@mikeythenurse
13 May 2021 20:29
@AgencyNurse @WeNurses Identify it, voice opposition, report it to moderators if on a FB group, model what positive nursing culture can look like through our responses. #WeNurses
@juliefulea
13 May 2021 20:29
@WeNurses For me the positives have far outweighed any negatives #wenurses
@HuggablyGothic
13 May 2021 20:29
@WeNurses ...and I need to remember this myself as I have some trigger moments where I face the potential of full knee-jerk reaction #WeNurses https://t.co/iPrn2iK7lI
@aimzjordan
13 May 2021 20:29
@mikeythenurse @WeNurses This has been increasingly apparent with opinions surrounding the pandemic. I've seen a few nurses share dangerous personal opinions regarding vaccines etc which to the general public could be quite damaging. We are in a position of trust and should bear that in mind ?? #wenurses
@PSMJW
13 May 2021 20:29
@WeNurses It’s a powerful tool for good when used properly, for education, for advice, for support.... the positives outweigh the negatives, even if the negatives get more airtime #WeNurses
@AgencyNurse
13 May 2021 20:29
@mikeythenurse @WeNurses could not agree more #WeNurses
@WeNurses
13 May 2021 20:30
@juliefulea that's good to hear :) #wenurses
@mikeythenurse
13 May 2021 20:30
@AgencyNurse @WeNurses And if we know the people address it with the person in a positive way, the same way you would if you observed it in your clinical setting #WeNurses

@WeNurses Networking with other nurses is vital I think for your own learning. Also all my opportunities so far in my career have come from people I've been lucky to meet on twitter to be involved with different things. It is also fantastic to know what's going on in nursing #WeNurses
@HuggablyGothic
13 May 2021 20:32
@WeNurses There are pros and cons to different social media. It is harder to moderate Twitter, for example, but you can have a far broader reach #WeNurses
@swan_anthony
13 May 2021 20:32
@firogers3 @WeNurses Yes definitely it could maybe become mandatory to do an update on how to use social media every year #WeNurses
@Jeanette_Ren
13 May 2021 20:33
@WeNurses The challenges of nurses being on social media are if you let people know you are a nurse ( and proud to be a nurse) you are representing your profession and have a responsibility to be a role model #WeNurses
@Winn_on_Health
13 May 2021 20:33
@AgencyNurse Perhaps advise nurses what they should and should not be Tweeting about. If Tweets are having a -ve impact an intervention by other users (eg Reporting) needs to take place Education can build quality into comms but ult professionals are responsible for what they write #WeNurses
@WeNurses
13 May 2021 20:34
@HuggablyGothic we all have different triggers.... we haven't shared this for, well, years!!! #wenurses https://t.co/hnOvGajR4U
@firogers3
13 May 2021 20:35
@WeNurses I can genuinely say have never looked back since being encouraged to set up a Twitter account. Opportunities outweigh challenges! #WeNurses
@WeNurses
13 May 2021 20:35
QUESTION 4 What creative examples of solutions have you seen when presented with challenges that have arisen through nurses use of social media? #WeNurses https://t.co/p8GreUfBm5
@Helenski17
13 May 2021 20:35
@WeNurses I agree with all the points here! #WeNurses
@AgencyNurse
13 May 2021 20:36
@Winn_on_Health I think it's hard to list do's and do nots though ... so definitely about the approach... reminding nurses that all social media is public (even private messages can be screen shot) so important to keep to the code #WeNurses
@NRCUK
13 May 2021 20:36
@firogers3 @WeNurses So pleased you did :) #wenurses
@AgencyNurse
13 May 2021 20:36
Would love to hear any examples #WeNurses https://twitter.com/WeNurses/status/1392926397589598211
@Winn_on_Health
13 May 2021 20:36
@AgencyNurse I'd be interested to understand more about this. I Tweet outside work hours on topics I'm interested in & IMO warrant sharing. But I don't see this is work activity #WeNurses
@firogers3
13 May 2021 20:37
@swan_anthony @WeNurses Definitely provides an insight into so many specialties and nursing and nurses in the broadest sense #WeNurses
@aimzjordan
13 May 2021 20:37
@WeNurses Of course! For example, I think COVID has introduced a new sharing culture of 'real life nursing' - experiences of those working on the frontline have had such a powerful and profound impact on the public. Much more than a government ad on tv #wenurses
@NRCUK

@Winn_on_Health I tweet outside of work too .... however i also tweet in work ! how much do we encourage nurses to use social media for CPD, networking and support out side of work ?? will this ultimately have an effect on our work life balance ? #WeNurses
@JackieKirkham
13 May 2021 20:39
@swan_anthony @WeNurses Agree ??. The amount of support and pointers I got from the #whywedoresearch community when I was applying for my research nurse post was awesome, they really went above and beyond. #WeNurses
@Winn_on_Health
13 May 2021 20:39
@AgencyNurse Agree. Broad principles are better than lists; and the Code is helpful. #WeNurses

@WeNurses This is what came to mind first. A nurse here was repeatedly and unapologetically racist on Facebook in a nursing group, was reported to the nursing council and had her registration revoked. Maybe not creative but certainly appropriate #WeNurses https://www.rnz.co.nz/news/national/428938/nurse-has-registration-cancelled-following-racist-social-media-posts
