Social media & nursing Tweetchat 4: Exploring the impact that social media is having on nurses & nursing - the challenges & solutions

Over the month of May WeNurses will be exploring social media and nursing.  We want start to understand the relationship that nurses and nursing has with social media and the impact that this is having so throughout May we will be holding tweetchats, sharing blogs, infographics and podcasts and running polls to really scrutinise where social media and nursing is.

We want to consider two main areas:

The impact that nurses & nursing are having on social media

And

The impact that social media is having on nurses & nursing

In each of these areas we want to explore  the positive impact but also explore the challenges we have faced and how we have overcome them.

This tweetchat will be exploring the impact that social media is having on nurses & nursing – the challenges and solutions and aims to ask the following questions:

  • We talk a lot about the positive impact of social media on nurses but what about the challenges? Are there any? What are they?
  • What are the pressures placed on nurses using social media?
  • How does social media affect our mental health as nurses?
  • What can we do to monitor our mental health in social media spaces and look after our own wellbeing?
  • In a world that is becoming increasingly connected through social media what can nurses do moving forward to ensure the impact on us is positive?

I think that the being 'always on' element of social media is a huge challenge for nurses and can have an impact on our mental health ... really important that we are aware of this #WeNurses https://twitter.com/WeNurses/status/1397992288417206275

@WeNurses There is something about managing negative comments or trolls and not allowing it to impact on you personally. I've seen a few student nurses struggling with that when trying to make connections #WeNurses

QUESTION 2 What are the pressures placed on nurses using social media? #WeNurses https://t.co/4EfleFm9wk
@AgencyNurse
27 May 2021 20:15
@teresa_buchan @WeNurses yes i have seen this sometimes too ... it doesn't help that context is absent in social media so comments can be taken wrong ... important to support our students if we see this #WeNurses
@WeNurses
27 May 2021 20:16

@WeNurses It's about being accountable for what you write and being aware of confidentiality. It's a fine line with sharing practice and engaging in professional discussions on Social Media. #WeNurses
@BrianWebster18
27 May 2021 20:21
@AgencyNurse @CareHome_Nurse @WeNurses Should we be though? There was a tweet by a medical consultant about something relating to this the other day. The feeling there was we are all people before nurses (medics in that case) and showing that we have a life shouldn't be showing unprofessionalism #WeNurses
@AgencyNurse
27 May 2021 20:21
I think that there can be some pressures to post in accordance with organisational thinking .... i also think that social media can make us feel like we never step away from nursing as it can be constant #WeNurses https://twitter.com/WeNurses/status/1397994812628946945
@BrianWebster18
27 May 2021 20:22
@J_Critcher @WeNurses What or how do we define professionalism regarding social media I wonder? I know we have codes and guidelines, but there are also a lot of grey areas I think #WeNurses
@CareHome_Nurse
27 May 2021 20:23
@BrianWebster18 @AgencyNurse @WeNurses I totally agree with you. My partner feels we should be allowed a "private life" outwith our work role, he doesn't understand why are are not allowed that! #WeNurses
@BrianWebster18
27 May 2021 20:24
@CareHome_Nurse @AgencyNurse @WeNurses But then who or where does it say we're not? I know the NMC suggest we must remain professional and uphold the rep of the proffesion even when outwith work, but who decides what is and what is not these things ???? #WeNurses
@AgencyNurse
27 May 2021 20:24
@BrianWebster18 @CareHome_Nurse @WeNurses Yeah i get what you are saying .. and to be honest if i saw a pic of you on here with a beer in your hand i wouldn't think any less of you .... but that case a few years back when a RN was portrayed on the news with a bottle of wine always sticks in my head #WeNurses
@WeNurses
27 May 2021 20:25
QUESTION 3 How does social media affect our mental health as nurses? #WeNurses https://t.co/NaU3Leg78w
@CareHome_Nurse
27 May 2021 20:26
@AgencyNurse @BrianWebster18 @WeNurses Thats the issue a picture can be taken out of context and might not reflect the circumstances #WeNurses
@BrianWebster18
27 May 2021 20:26
@AgencyNurse @CareHome_Nurse @WeNurses Oh I maybe missed that story? Well this is it, it's a hard one, and often I ask, would the other professions be seen the same. Would the surgeon be OK having a bottle of wine but not the nurse? Interesting topic isn't it. #WeNurses
@AgencyNurse
27 May 2021 20:27
It can and we do need to be mindful of this .... we can get into conversations that upset us, we can be constantly checking for likes or comments, we can forget to see the world around us ... not just nurses though .. everyone #WeNurses https://twitter.com/WeNurses/status/1397997297087221763
@AgencyNurse
27 May 2021 20:27
@CareHome_Nurse @BrianWebster18 @WeNurses yes absolutely ... and therein lies the problem #WeNurses
@CareHome_Nurse
27 May 2021 20:28
@BrianWebster18 @AgencyNurse @WeNurses Makes for interesting discussion, do different professional bodies have different ideas on what constitutes professionalism outside of work? Reminds me of the Doctor who was reinstated by GMC after a drug error but the nurse still struck off by NMC #WeNurses
@AgencyNurse
27 May 2021 20:28
@BrianWebster18 @CareHome_Nurse @WeNurses I guess there will always be people who find offence ... it's up to us which risks we want to take ... in line with the code of course #WeNurses

@WeNurses That's different- it's a very well recognised image! I find that the most negative comments tend 2 come from random sources. don't mind anyone having different point of view, completely acceptable, but if u hide behind cryptic image-u are not standing by your own views #wenurses
