#WeNurses - Thursday 9th December 2021 8pm (GMT Standard Time) Use your voice to shape nurses use of EPRs

If you haven't joined in a tweet chat before it's very simple.    Here's a guide

Hosted by WeNurses using #WeNurses

This chat is guest hosted by @NHSTransform

Did you know, there is a national EPR usability survey currently underway...it is your opportunity to ensure the nurses' input is represented.

As nurses, we use electronic patient record systems (EPRs) more frequently than any other professional group in the NHS, so it’s crucial that our voice is heard in the survey so that these systems are designed to support nurses in our roles.

In this chat, we'll be joined by senior clinicians and technology leaders to look at what more can be done to make sure EPRs are developed with the nurse’s perspective in mind.

We'll be asking daily polls, these touch on some of the topics in the survey, during the lead-up to the chat and presenting and discussing the results together, look out for the polls that will be listed below from Monday 6th December:

Monday 6th December:

Tuesday 7th December:

Wednesday 8th December:

Thursday 9th December:

Even if you can't make the chat please make sure you complete the national EPR usability survey run by @NHSX, which is currently open to all clinical staff working in acute hospitals. It doesn't take long to complete and will help ensure that nurses, the biggest users of these clinical IT systems, also have the strongest voice in terms of shaping their future.

@WeNurses I think that the PC version is much better than the App on the pod. Sometimes I have to return back to the office to check things like wound care regime. If I could access on pod would be much easier. So for me it's 50/50 on supporting my role #WeNurses

@HCowls
09 December 2021 20:10
@WeNurses I think IT systems can support the nurses role, but they need to be relevant to the practice area , clear, not too long and easy to complete #wenurses
@WeNurses
09 December 2021 20:10
@CareHome_Nurse do we think it realistic, with the variety in nursing, that suppliers can get it right more often in terms of how we engage, the poll says they get it right quite a lot by the looks of it. #wenurses

@CareHome_Nurse @WeNurses or implementation "issues" in all the software i've provided it has rarely had the capacity to be well implemented. Often a single individual has the drive, they can leave and things die off :( #wenurses
@AgencyNurse
09 December 2021 20:13
@WeNurses eek not remotely .... working in social care and the systems I have come across are mostly confusing .... am sure they do more and can be more useful but finding the time to explore and discover is impossible #WeNurses
@alimully
09 December 2021 20:14
@WeNurses Unfortunately what many of these systems do is try and replicate the existing paper process rather than engage clinicians at the outset, result you get a system that doesn't work #wenurses
@JaneNewson
09 December 2021 20:14
@WeNurses #WeNurses I think it's a wasted opportunity for service improvement that so few Nurses say they have input in changing the IT to suit what they need to do their job well.
@CareHome_Nurse

09 December 2021 20:15

@MerielChudleigh
09 December 2021 20:15
#wenurses there does appear to be progress, thankfully. My Mum was involved in ICS development in the 90's this included handheld devices..they were a bit ahead of their time and unfortunately as the hardware broke down they were not replaced or upgraded.

@WeNurses I’m not surprised at the results - I don’t think these are deigned with either those having to fill in fields OR those who are trying to collate the data from these at a population level. Therefore not serving all the purposes it’s required to fulfill #wenurses

Yes. Nurses underrepresented & when engagement occurs it is far too late in the process (in my experience) Some stems from our lack of availability, some from 'too much work' (you have no idea unless you have been there) & an assumption that cannot impact decision #WeNurses https://twitter.com/WeNurses/status/1468478743668830208

@CareHome_Nurse
09 December 2021 20:37

@WeNurses @NHSX I still work clinically, so I use the systems I help to develop. Nurses tell me what they like and don’t like. They are open and honest which is refreshing., so I take that feedback back. Covid has helped accelerate demand for more #wenurses

@WeNurses Not anywhere near enough empowerment of nurses to really feel in control of, supported by, and confident in using systems. Any other nursing skill requires training to ensure confidence and competence but IT is often left for nurses to “wing it” #WeNurses

I think everyone is tired. Even this chat is quiet. But sadly technology is an essential part of the future. If nurses don’t engage technologists will be forced to make the decisions. #WeNurses #nursing

@WeNurses Disappointing that nurses don’t feel they are given opportunity to feed into the decision making processes. As key users nurses should be stakeholders in the entire process. #WeNurses

@WeNurses @NHSX Also having a positive supportive working relationships with the technical teams, the developers, testers, project managers, business analysts also really helps to build a team, who are focussed on doing the best for our colleagues and improving care for our patients #wenurses

The other thing that really matters is if we don’t get involved in designing systems we won’t be able to show what nurses do and the contribution they make! #wenurses

@WeNurses Any or all of the following are likely and very valid: Lack of time Lack of training (from pre reg to CPD this should be woven through) Feedback is often lengthy questionnaires The “This doesn’t really apply to me” myth #WeNurses
