#WeNurses - Thursday 10th February 2022 8:30pm (GMT Standard Time) Falls prevention

If you haven't joined in a tweet chat before it's very simple.    Here's a guide

 Chat Details

Hosted by WeNurses using #WeNurses

Falls risk assessments are a common part of nursing practice, we complete them as a matter of course for many of the people we care for ... yet how often do we stop and think about falls? All Our Health (2021) states "Falls and fractures are a common and serious health issue faced by older people in England. People aged 65 and older have the highest risk of falling; around a third of people aged 65 and over, and around half of people aged 80 and over, fall at least once a year. Falling is a cause of distress, pain, injury, loss of confidence, loss of independence and mortality." Falls have a major impact on both the health and wellbeing of the people we care for ... so isn't it time that we thought beyond risk assessments and thought more about prevention?

This tweetchat aims to explore the following questions:

Pre chat polls:

  • What are is the most common reason, in your experience, for someone falling?
  • Do you routinely ask the people you care for about falls?
Tweetchat questions:
  • What are the risk factors that increase the likelihood of someone falling?
  • What are the specific activities which can help to prevent falls?
  • How can we shift the focus from falling to be more about moving safely in nursing?
Post chat polls:
  • In your experience what one intervention makes the biggest impact in falls prevention?
  • Which resource would you most recommend to other nurses regarding falls prevention?

to be honest there are so many risk factors ... but it always boils down to the fact that we need to explore this holistically and take a person centred approach to help reduce incidence of falling #WeNurses

And then is there a danger of not encouraging people to move safely and they become more at risk ? #WeNurses

#WeNurses The presence of a nurse is such a crucial element of patient care to prevent the risk of falls. I found that factors such as vision impairment - whether due to age or following surgery - can increase that risk. Therefore communication is crucial @mdx_EL

@WeNurses As Nurses we need to consider the risks in not actively encouraging patients to mobilise often - 1-2% muscle loss can occur per day. 3 weeks of bed rest is the equivalent to 30 years of ageing! #WeNurses
