#WeNurseAcademics - Thursday 6th October 2022 8:30pm (GMT Standard Time) #WeNurseAcademics Assessment and Feedback

If you haven't joined in a tweet chat before it's very simple.    Here's a guide

 Chat Details

Hosted by WeNurses using #WeNurseAcademics

This chat is guest hosted by @melhayward @Helenski17

Assessment feedback and feedforward in both theory and practice are one of the supportive systems used by Nurse Academics, Practice Educators, Assessors and Supervisors to assist in the advancement of nursing students’ professional and academic knowledge, skills, and behaviours.

It entails delivering information to students with the purpose of reducing the discrepancy between their current and desired performance as well as focusing on their future development.

Although assessment feedback and feedforward are widely acknowledged as important elements in nurse education, it is a component in which nurse educators often fall short and student nurses find problematic to receive and act upon.

This tweet chat explores some of the key issues surrounding assessment feedback and feedforward and seeks views regarding our roles, its future development, and use.

We'll be working our way through the following chat polls and questions for the chat:

Pre-chat Polls:

•  Are Nurse Educators clear about how to deliver good quality assessment feedback to student nurses?
•
Why is feedforward on assessment so important for student nurses to receive?

Chat questions:

•  What do you think are the most important principles in delivering theory/academic and practice assessment feedback and feedforward to student nurses?

•  Should Nurse Academics play a role in supporting Practice Supervisors and Practice Assessors with delivering feedback and feedforward for assessment in practice? If so, how?

•  What are the barriers to delivering effective feedback and feedforward on theoretical/academic assessment to student nurses?And how can Nurse Academics overcome these?

•  How can we all encourage student nurses to access, use and value their assessment feedback and feedforward more successfully?

Yes. As link lecturers and also as academic assessors we play a vital role. Needs to be tripartite assessment & academics often in best position to see ‘journey’ of student across parts #wenurseacademics https://twitter.com/WeNurses/status/1578107574389379072

@CYP_UoB_Kelvin

@rachaelmajor1
06 October 2022 20:49
@WeNurses Feed forward needs to help them develop and be useful for future assignments. Needs to be clear, easy to understand and specific. Bullet points are helpful to make feed forward stand out #WeNurseAcademics
@IsisPUNC
06 October 2022 20:49
@WeNurses #wenurseacademics #punc22 having the time to deliver feedback. I would like to say effective time management would help overcome this, but staff shortages do not make this easy. this is just one barrier
@paeds_Ellena
06 October 2022 20:49
@WeNurses As to be a nurse we have to pass both aspects of the course, placement and theory - therefore correspondence between both areas is crucial, but potentially not the ‘be all or end all’… It also closes the ‘gap’ between placement and university too! #WeNurseAcademics
@Helenski17
06 October 2022 20:49
@JillAnneWill @WeNurses Absolutely, sharing feedback is so important for morale #WeNurseAcademics
@J_Critcher
06 October 2022 20:49

@AimeePUNC22 @WeNurses Good to know! #WeNurseAcademics
@RakheeLb
06 October 2022 20:50
@WeNurses #WeNurseAcademics “Maternal” desires to avoid upsetting the student. Lack of direct observation, objectives, some nurses lack confidence, cultural, gender, language, interpersonal/perceptual barriers.
@PhillHRN
06 October 2022 20:50
@WeNurses Volume & meet turnaround targets are a big factor especially in pre-reg nursing programmes. Looking at a varied assessment menu can help, does every assessment need to be a 3000 word essay for example? #WeNurseAcademics
@JillAnneWill
06 October 2022 20:51
@melhayward @AimeePUNC22 @WeNurses Tricky to achieve. I have done oral feedback on turnitin. Personally, I feel like I have better structure and detail when it's typed out. However, there's little room to misinterpret tone via audio feedback. Pros and cons for both. #WeNurseAcademics
@rachaelmajor1
06 October 2022 20:51
@WeNurses Yes, an important role of the academic assessor to support practice assessor. Even more important for failing students and supporting action plans. #WeNurseAcademics
@Mermcm
06 October 2022 20:51
Group feedback on assignments as well as individual can be helpful eg as a group these were the things that weren’t done so well & ways to improve, takes some of the ‘personal’ out of it which sometimes not a bad thing #WeNurseAcademics https://twitter.com/Mermcm/status/1578109913062150145
@reboverend_RNc
06 October 2022 20:51
@melhayward Not sure we do Melanie- I love growth mindset and work towards that for others but know I can also give myself ‘fixed mindset’ opinions when things don’t go so well!! Important to role model it for sure…Education background affects you for a lifetime #wenurseacademics

@StevenGrimbleby How does this impact the feedback given? #WeNurseAcademics
@GhineaLioara
06 October 2022 20:52
@WeNurses Mostly is the miscommunication and the fixed dates. I think a more flexible timeline and booking our own review within a set period will be an approach to reviews that maybe will encourage less anxiety and better plan and openness #WeNurseAcademics #NAMDX
@PhillHRN
06 October 2022 20:53
@WeNurses Absolutely tripartite feedback is so valuable to all, time pressures being a barrier and in my experience is often only used in complex situations (eg failing issues) #WeNurseAcademics
@CalvinMoorley
06 October 2022 20:53
@Mermcm #WeNurseAcademics the real struggle is recognising with all good intentions you cannot provide quality feedback when you have 60 scripts to mark in two weeks x 3 modules =180. So you settle for 3 point to improve 3 to commend and tell student they can always book for a 1:1

@WeNurses As a practice education lecturer i have supported PS/PA provide constrictive, supportive and student centred feedback. Often visit clinical areas to support providing feedback to students. #wenurseacademics
@CYP_UoB_Kelvin
06 October 2022 20:54
@reboverend_RNc @melhayward I think naturally we will always go back to fixed mindset perspectives because that’s what many of us are used to. As long as we identify when we have that’s what’s important ?? #WeNurseAcademics
@Mermcm
06 October 2022 20:54

@Helenski17 @WeNurses I recently gave feedback to a practice assessor too. They went into such detail, used brilliant examples and oozed enthusiasm. I hope it helps them keep up their excellent work. I could see clearly why the student had enjoyed their placement so much! #WeNurseAcademics

@PhillHRN
06 October 2022 20:57

@NursingKingston we use a mixture of assessment methods.
