#WeMHNs - Monday 10th October 2022 8pm (GMT Standard Time) You are still here...

If you haven't joined in a tweet chat before it's very simple.    Here's a guide

 Chat Details

Hosted by WeMHNurses using #WeMHNs

The 2nd in a series of 4 Tweetchats in October encompassing October's Mental Health Day where @WeMHNurses will be tweetchatting every Monday alongside a team of national MHNs that are here to support, learn with, and from you to strengthen both our and the wider audiences' understanding, value and interest in mental health nursing.

We are pleased, subject to availability, to be joined by for this series of tweetchats by @NursingEmma , @Attard5Attard ,  @EmmaPerry2007 , @kathryncurrah , @viccharlesworth ,  you can see their full bios here.

We would encourage all healthcare roles to join these tweetchats, whether actively participating or following the chats as they happen to learn about mental health nursing.

For this tweetchat we explore:

"You are still here..."

Building on last week’s chat on exploring “What Mental Health Nursing is...?”, when we looked at a few aspects of being a mental health nurses, this week we move on to looking at being a mental health nurse right now.

Looking at workforce figures, compiled from a couple of @NHS_HealthEdEng shared workforce data sets, we see that:

Following a relatively long-term trend showing a drop in mental health nurses has been recently reversed in the 5 years shown by Chart 1

However, a look at the recent trend of mental health nurses leaving the profession is on the increase shown in chart 2

We can also see that student numbers for mental health nursing are on the up, whilst not all students will join the workforce what is encouraging is that attrition rates are falling. Historically, attrition rates for nurses on mental health courses have been at about 14%, with recent cohorts (2018-19 Undergraduates, 2019-20 Postgraduates) at 12% and 11% respectively.

Vacancies wise in mental health nursing, from NHS Digital data,  we see in table 1 below, that mental health vacancies are running at nearly 17% which is higher than that across nursing of just over 10%

Amongst the @WeMHNurses community, we have a vast variety in roles, experiences, and time in mental health nursing, some will have been through the decline and regrowth of our numbers shown above, and all of us will be experiencing the increased service demand, complete with the remaining existing 11,000 plus vacancies recorded, and many are part of the future of the mental health workforce as students.

Given the workforce figures and reality faced every day as a mental health nurse, this chat aims to explore, understand and learn the reasons why YOU are "still here". What is it that keeps us going and why you have we not succumbed to the pressures that regrettably are reportedly meaning "Peak nursing numbers are leaving nursing" detailed by @nuffieldtrust?

We'll be exploring this via the following questions:

  • What is your experience of being an MHN at the moment?
  • What motivates you at the moment to be a mental health nurse?
  • What are the current opportunities to help mental health nurses manage pressures?
  • How can we ensure we are aware of and share what is working well to support MHNs?
  • Do you know MHNs that have left the profession and do you know what drove them to leave?
  • What do you think may have helped MHNs that have left nursing to stay?
  • What one thing can we do to support ourselves and each other now as mental health nurses?

You can use this tweetchat for participatory CPD / Revalidation via #MyWe, here's a how-to guide, and the login link to #MyWe

If you've not joined a tweetchat before here's how:

Using a hashtag (#) like #WeMHnurses allows us to use a Twitter feature that shows everyone the tweets that contain it, this allows us to chat with people that we don't follow, yet, enabling the ability for us to chat together on Twitter.

  • To see the chat click (or search) for #WeMHNurses on Twitter
  • Look out for questions and others' responses that interest you

@WeMHNurses Fatigue, a lack of appreciation (via pay and also lack of staffing support). It’s a shame to hear that MH nurses are having to leave the profession in order to protect their own mental health. You’d think the system would recognise the importance of staff well-being! #WeMHNs

@WeMHNurses I know someone who left in their first year of nursing as they didn't like the medical model of cmht and went into something totally different. I believe they'd had reservations during their 3rd year as a student #wemhns

@WeMHNurses Well for example, we have issues recruiting to academic posts. Lots of reasons etc. But one way is giving people honorary contracts where they can come and contribute to bits of teaching and research without committing full hog. Let people dabble in what interests them #WeMHNs

@WeMHNurses Somewhat yes. I think from my own experience, there is acknowledgment of the huge problems and they’re beginning to tackle it. But a lack of time and staffing makes it unfeasible to carry out. The support seems to be there but hard and timely to reach out for #WeMHNs

@Attard5Attard @gearoidbrennan @LeanneHPatrick @WeMHNurses I don't believe they do - which is a real shame. There's been a mass exodus from ward to community recently and I think this would have reduced this significantly #WeMHNs
@WeMHNurses

@AnnMarieBright Hi Ann-Marie, thanks for joining us on #WeMHNs Some of these are arguable long-term fixes, or out of our control, what can we do for those that aren't? #WeMHNs
@gearoidbrennan
10 October 2022 20:47
@WeMHNurses Clear mutual expectations and boundaries. We don't talk about them enough anymore. But so important to keep everyone safe. We have to be realistic about what we can(not) do! We also need media/public engagement skills so we can talk about our work better #WeMHNs
@gearoidbrennan
10 October 2022 20:49
@WeMHNurses I would also add that people need mentorship longterm. Older generation have duty to offer hand to next generation. Invite them to policy meetings, help plan careers, get them involved in research projects! #WeMHNs

@EmmaPerry2007 @WeMHNurses So I have separate contracts so there is a nice clear boundary. Also both employers are supportive of the concept of me having a foot in both which helps too. You sort of make it work. You also need to set boundaries though about workload & availability which is harder #WeMHNs
