If you haven't joined in a tweet chat before it's very simple.    Here's a guide

Hosted by WeCYPnurses using #WeCYPNs

This chat is guest hosted by @ericasmart

Preceptorship is a structured transition period for a newly registered professional, this can vary in length but is usually 1 year. Getting preceptorship right has been shown to be important for recruitment and retention, staff satisfaction and patient care. Preceptorship aims to support and empower staff, to grow on the knowledge and skills they already have and enter into a career of lifelong learning.

The benefits of Preceptorship are explained here by the Nursing and Midwifery Council (2020)

Although voluntary, we know preceptorship helps newly registered professionals have the best possible start as a registered professional in the UK.

We know preceptorship has a variety of benefits for employers and preceptees, among others.

Benefits for nurses, midwives and nursing associates:

· Preceptorship offers the structured support needed to transition their knowledge into everyday practice successfully.

· It provides a lifelong journey of reflection and the ability to self-identify continuing professional development needs.

· A positive preceptorship experience is reported to result in newly registered nurses, midwives and nursing associates having increased confidence and sense of belonging, feeling valued by their employer.

Benefits for employers:

· Effective preceptorship outcomes are linked to improved recruitment and retention. Attracting and retaining skilled nurses, midwives, and nursing associates is important for delivering better, safe and effective care. Principles of preceptorship - The Nursing and Midwifery Council (nmc.org.uk) https://www.nmc.org.uk/standards/guidance/preceptorship/

In an open letter in July 2022, Ruth May Chief Nursing Officer of England has asked all Trust to adopt the national preceptorship framework as a high impact action.  https://trustsrv-io-tavistock-tenant-mediabucket-jxlat5oi107p.s3.amazonaws.com/media/documents/Ruth_Mays_Office_Retention_of_nursing_and_midwifery_colleagues_letter.pdf?X-Amz-Algorithm=AWS4-HMAC-SHA256&X-Amz-Credential=AKIASPFGSFA5MV75PZDY%2F20221003%2Feu-west-2%2Fs3%2Faws4_request&X-Amz-Date=20221003T201932Z&X-Amz-Expires=3600&X-Amz-SignedHeaders=host&X-Amz-Signature=dd612789be38d20d7e260f2fc5db1d7b107a7cf7fc06ddbd71098071eb2325e6

So with Preceptorship such a hot topic and because programmes can so widely vary we want to hear from you!

We'll be exploring the topic via the following questions:

  • Did you receive any preceptorship?  If not why not?  If yes, how was it?
  • Does your organisation offer preceptor training, if not should/could it?
  • What would you do to support a newly registered professional?
  • What would an ideal preceptorship programme look like?
  • What were/are the biggest issues you found/challenges you faced during preceptorship?
  • What advice would you give to a newly registered professional?
  • What can we all do to ensure preceptorship is a valued and effect opportunity within our organisations?
  • What will you do differently tomorrow following tonight's preceptorship tweetchat?
