#WeNurses - Thursday 7th April 2016 8pm (GMT Standard Time) The role of social media in supporting diversity - WeWebinar

If you haven't joined in a tweet chat before it's very simple.    Here's a guide

 Chat Details

Hosted by WeNurses using #WeNurses

This chat is guest hosted by @DiverseLearners @PlymUni @dtbarron

Following the success of our WeWebinars last year we have decided to pop another webinar into the WeNurses chat diary - “The role of social media In supporting diversity” as before we will hold a simultaneous #WeNurses Twitter discussion – it sounds complicated but it really isn't, its just watching a discussion and taking part via Twitter. The webinar will be held in conjunction with those lovely people at Plymouth University and Diverse Learners and we are looking forward to getting lots of people following & discussing diversity.

How to get involved:

Joining in is as easy as 1,2,3 ..... 4 :D

Pre Webinar Blurb:

Question Time – an interactive webinar and tweetchat that has a similar format to BBC “Question Time” where questions are posed “live” by the audience and chair. The panel discusses them presenting different perspectives. Questions can be submitted via Twitter or email in advance or live during the webinar or tweetchat - of course (as with Question Time) feel free to chat and comment via Twitter as the webinar takes place - we will be building in a few Twitter Stops to ensure we bring the threads of the Twitter conversation into the Webinar.

A collaboration with WeNurses, Diverse Learners, Plymouth University, Paul Deemer and Derek Barron to have an interactive discussion of the individual responsibilities of all to addressing diversity - in relation to disability.

There will be a chance for you to put your questions for theoretical discussion, debate, the panel will respond to questions from"the audience" and they’ll be opportunities for sharing good practice exploring and practical solutions.

The themes for the discussion and we welcome questions about:

There seems to be a gap between what we do for, and advocate for, patients in accommodating their diverse needs compared to that of those we work alongside. The transferable skills and knowledge we utilise with patients - assistive technology, use of tech, MDT working, health promotion, use of frameworks - are equally appropriate for our co-workers but there seems to be under-utilisation / under valuing and lack of awareness and application of that skill set.

This may be for a variety of reasons such as:

- Don't know they can do something - don't know who to ask / where to seek help

- Lack of confidence,

- Lack of knowledge,

- Lack of practical solutions

- Lack of knowledge re funding streams

- Fear about doing something wrong /  how  to do it

- Role of the environment, geographically, practically and culture

We hope to address the themes and barriers (some of which are listed above) to supporting diversity / discuss specific issues, heighten awareness, boost confidence and hopefully action.

 Chat Summary

Many thanks to all that joined the webinar and tweeted along side the panelists.

Below you'll be able to see a recording of the webinar that covered diversity in both providing care and delivering care.

There were many shares around the value of social media supporting diversity with experiences coming from those that had found it personally and professionally impactful.

Two themes came across on how social media 1. drives awareness of diverse needs given the open nature of the space and the diverse range of users, and how  2. this means social media affords those with diverse needs to express their needs and those looking to support them learn more about their needs and how to support them.

This win-win was shared by all as being a key benefit that social media has afforded those with and those supporting those with diverse needs.

Interesting topics covered in the webinar below were "Thought Diversity" and the role of "Diversity Champions", we'd recommend a watch or listen of the webinar and of course using #MyWe above for your CPD if diversity is of interest to you as somebody with either diverse needs or the desire to support them, as we all should both for patients and peers.
