The World Health Organisation (WHO) states ‘breastfeeding is the normal way of providing young infants with the nutrients they need for healthy growth and development. Virtually all mothers can breastfeed, provided they have accurate information, and the support of their family, the health care system and society at large. Exclusive breastfeeding is recommended up to 6 months of age, with continued breastfeeding along with appropriate complementary foods up to two years of age or beyond’ (WHO 2016).

Colostrum is the yellowish, sticky breast milk produced at the end of pregnancy, is recommended by WHO as the perfect food for the newborn and feeding should be initiated within the first hour after birth. Colostrum is a milky substance that is produced by mammary glands in the breasts of mammals before birth and during the first few days following birth. Human and bovine colostrum are thick, sticky and yellowish. While breast milk is highly nutritious and immensely beneficial to newborns, colostrum is thicker, more concentrated in protein, and lower in fat than breast milk.

Fab Change Day 2016 included our global pledge to question and change our attitudes and behaviors towards Colostrum. We want to co-design supports to highlight the value of colostrum for every baby, every family, every nation. Colostrum is a priority, a gold standard first food and immunisation for babies globally.

'Every Drop Counts'

Olive O'Connor (mother), Sally Goodwin (midwife), Prof. Minesh Khashu (neonatologist) and Deirdre Munro (midwife).
