Thank you to @chris_dlamini and @John1827Joyce for suggesting this #WeNurses discussion.

The Carers Trust states that a carer is:

“anyone who cares, unpaid, for a friend or family member who due to illness, disability, a mental health problem or an addiction cannot cope without their support.”

A carer can be anyone – a young person caring for a parent with a disability, a husband caring for a wife with terminal cancer or a daughter caring for a parent with dementia.

The role that carers play in healthcare is vital, their knowledge and experienceare invaluable, not only in helping us, as nurses, to care to that person but also in learning together as we all move forward.

Reynish et al (2017) state the importance of empowering carers:

“When considering how professionals can empower and support carers, one of the most important areas to emphasise is to ensure carers are identified as carers. Without this identification their needs will not be assessed and they will not gain access to the appropriate support,”

Reynish et al go on to add how healthcare professionals can empower carers by taking time to discuss and talk to them, provide clear information, signpost to local services and involve carers as “equal partners in care”

With this in mind this #WeNurses discussion aims to explore the role of carers and ask the following questions:

  • What do we mean by “carer”?
  • How can we work with carers to provide great care –on an individual level?
  • How can we work with carers to provide great care –on a system wide level?
  • What do nurses believe empowerment to be?
  • How do/can nurses empower carers?
  • What are the barriers to/ risks of empowerment?
  • How can having empowered carers help us deliver great care?
