1 in 4 people will experience a mental health problem this year yet as a society we are often very reluctant to talk about mental health and wellbeing, and this can lead to people feeling ashamed, isolated and worthless.  (Time to Change 2020)

Talking about mental health can really help to change lives and all health and care professionals have an important role in leading the way when it comes to mental health and well being. Wellbeing and mental health: Applying All Our Health (PHE 2019) states:

Front-line health professionals can:

  •  use the Make every contact count resource, and take every opportunity to have brief conversations with people about making positive changes
  • incorporate psychological aspects of care within all care pathways
  • identify risk factors and symptoms of mental health problems and signpost and refer appropriately
  • identify risk factors and indicators for potential self-harm and suicide and support individuals who may present with suicidal thoughts and refer appropriately
  • guide individuals with existing mental health problems through health promotion advice - and support them to access services to improve their physical health and wellbeing (screening, health checks, physical activity, debt advice)
  • use basic coaching techniques to support an individual who may be experiencing mental distress

This #AllOurHealth Tweetchat will focus on the importance of health and care professionals talking about mental health and wellbeing and the impact we can all have.  The Tweetchat will explore the following questions:

  • Why is it important to talk about mental health & wellbeing?
  • What action can we take in our day to day roles to meet our patients mental health and wellbeing needs?
  • How do we identify those people at risk of poor mental health and what action can we take?
  • Have you used PHE’s Every Mind Matters campaign and resources in your practice? What has worked well and what could we develop or improve?
  • What one action can you take in regard to mental health and wellbeing following this Tweetchat?

 Chat Summary

Another great @hullnursing tweetchat where students were encouraged to not only answer the posed questions but discuss each other's answers too, this resulted in some lively discussion and really got the whole group talking, evidenced by the engagement wheel above.

We have picked out some of the conversation related to the posed questions for those that missed the chat

Stigma was mentioned by many when asked "Why is it important to talk about mental health & wellbeing?"

Moving on to how healthcare professionals practice and behavior can support patients there were several themes that came out, many being by-products of Making Every Contact Count:

Again students were asked to detail not just a response to a question but also asked what actions they would take, this was designed to help them realise that having knowledge but not knowing how to action them isn't ideal. The question is designed to ensure that when finding new evidence they explore it right through into how the practice or how to change how they practice:

We talked about PHE's Every Mind Matters campaign and ask the students what they thought

Drumming home the need to action your learnings into practice changed, we asked the students what actions they would take following the mental health resources that they had been exposed to during the WeLearn courses they are on.

@WeLearnOutLoud There's still a huge stigma around mental health, and a lot of people still feel very alone with it. 1 in 6 adults suffers with MH, a big number and more people may be inclined to get help if they're aware of just how many others there are in the same position. #AllOurHealth

@WeLearnOutLoud Listen- some people just need someone to actively listen to them, to hear the words 'I'm fine' and question if there's anything they want to talk about. MECC is vital here, building up a rapport and gaining their trust so we support them in whatever way they need #AllOurHealth

@Rebecca62473967 @WeLearnOutLoud Completely agree. I found that mental and physical health also affect each other in really surprising ways too #AllOurHealth
@Gembopinx
11 February 2021 18:57
@WeLearnOutLoud we need to be mental health literacy aware! Making sure we are constantly expanding our own knowledge about MH, in preparation to pass that onto our patients and team members alike! Early prevention is key! #Allourhealth #welearnoutloud

@a_nur17
11 February 2021 18:57
@WeLearnOutLoud An action that we could take to meet our patients needs will be listening to them. Creating an comfortable environment will allow them to open up and share their problems with you. As professional you must make use of the 6 Cs as this is what will help out. #AllOurHealth
@chloepinks_
11 February 2021 18:57
@WeLearnOutLoud Person-centred care is vital and remembering every patient has different needs. By recognising and responding to changes in a patients health or wellbeing, and talking to the patient or encouraging them do activities they’ll benefit from #AllOurHealth
@StudentNurseMLC
11 February 2021 18:57
#AllOurHealth for some patients it will feel uncomfortable to speak about the way they feel, so making sure I am extremely open, patient and understanding will help them feel just the smallest amount comfortable with the situation, so they can get the help they want and advice.
@clairebwmn
11 February 2021 18:58

@Soph_H_0802 @WeLearnOutLoud yes i love this, i read this week that asking twice how someone is can help, often people will automatically reply if you ask how they are, or they may consider their response, asking them "really how are you?" #AllOurHealth
@StudentNurseTil
11 February 2021 18:59
@WeLearnOutLoud We can listen to them! We can promote healthier behaviours, be knowledgeable around mental health to help recognise symptoms and treat them early. We can build good relationships so patients can learn to trust us and talk to us. #AllOurHealth #MentalHealthMatters

Here is todays QUESTION 1 Why is it important to talk about mental health & wellbeing? #AllOurHealth Group C https://t.co/IT3t7N4WBQ
@stn_seg
11 February 2021 19:30
@WeLearnOutLoud By talking about mental health we can reduce feelings of isolation and “being alone” in the issue. It also removes the stigma surrounding the topic which can aide recovery and allows for access to support and resources #AllOurHealth

@WeLearnOutLoud Good evening #allourhealth
@shannongillatt_
11 February 2021 19:32
@WeLearnOutLoud It’s important to talk about mental health as it breaks the stigma (especially for men), it educates on the signs and symptoms but also opens up conversations for people who may be struggling #AllOurHealth
@jen_student
11 February 2021 19:32
@WeLearnOutLoud There is unfortunately still stigma around talking about mental health. The more we talk about it, the more we normalise the conversation #Allourhealth
