#WeStNs - Wednesday 14th October 2020 8pm (GMT Standard Time) Student nurse leadership: Leading teams

If you haven't joined in a tweet chat before it's very simple.    Here's a guide

 Chat Details

Hosted by WeStudentNurse using #WeStNs

This chat is guest hosted by @HeatherHenry4

As part of a series of chats lead by@WeStudentNurse on leadership, this chat focuses on preparing student nurses to lead teams.

The Nursing and Midwifery Council, NHS Leadership Academy and Council of Deans of Health are all encouraging student nurses to learn and practice their leadership skills from the start of their courses.  We’ve teamed up with Heather Henry (@HeatherHenry4), a well-known nurse entrepreneur and member of @WeGPNs (her background is in primary care). Heather is writing a book on leadership for student nurses and wants your input to make it as relevant as possible.

The King’s Fund has recently published‘The Courage of Compassion’: how to transform nurses’ and midwives’ workplaces so they can thrive and flourish, so they are able to deliver compassionate high quality care. Part of this is about providing the right team culture and climate of psychological safety, shared team leadership, taking time to review and improve, and work cooperatively across boundaries with other teams and departments.

Discussion:

Focussed themes include:

  1. What’s your biggest fear about leading others? What would help?
  2. How can students better understand the role of politics & culture in leadership?

  1. How can/do universities and placements bridge the leadership theory/practice gap?
  2. How can students use social media to lead?
  3. What’s the role of students in creative thinking and positive challenge?

@WeStudentNurse More courses available around leadership for students. Its hard i feel as we haven't been there as long and we've never had till so this. I always felt a tinge of guilt as I could do the job myself so why delegate if that makes sense #WeStNs
@uoldancingnurse
14 October 2020 20:08
@WeStudentNurse From personal experience it’s being let down when leading others in a team by my team mates. Because you’re the leader you have the responsibility of your teams progress regardless of how much effort everyone else is willing to put in #WeStNs

@HeatherHenry4 @WeStudentNurse I think in general. I really struggled to get nursing students to participate and contribute to my leadership series for example over on @ThinkTheory19 as they didnt think they were leaders (this was also the case with registered nurses) #WeStNs

@WeStudentNurse For me I think it’s good old imposter syndrome, despite plenty of experience in leadership in the voluntary sector it’s the responsibility that goes with it. Once the ‘what ifs’ take over there hard to shake, for me I think dry runs before the real thing #WeStNs

14 October 2020 20:10
@WeStudentNurse That I won't be listened to, or that I'll be seen as 'just a student'. I think as students we can see somewhere with 'new eyes' in a way and it would be good if that was acknowledged and we were asked for our ideas or opinions. #WeStNs

@NaomiBe44702921 @WeStudentNurse Think this is a good point and I was just saying to some of the council of deans of health here in Scotland that perhaps Offical leadership programmes can encourage those in the cohorts to then go on and share their experiences with peers #WeStNs

@WeStudentNurse To help, knowing that whilst I’m leading something, I’m still not alone, I’m still able to access support and get support with leading my team if needed. Sometimes I feel like a leader is a very lonely place to be, because you’re almost expected to know what to do #WeStNs

@HeatherHenry4 @WeStudentNurse I don't think it really is very common, certainly, if I express that I'm not a 'proper' nurse (which is rare) then at least RNs will tell me I am. But there is also the temporary nature of being a student on placement that means it's harder to influence change #WeStNs

@WeStudentNurse We are a fresh set of eyes so we might be able to see problems in services that current healthcare professionals have missed, don’t undermine your StNs opinion because they are ‘just a student’ they are the future workforce so they should be encouraged to challenge things #WeStNs

@ClarkRichardJ @WeStudentNurse We don't, but there is a difference between allying yourself with a political party & saying that something should be done about a situation that negatively impacts patient health. The world might not be able to be perfect for everyone, but maybe we can make it fairer #WeStNs

@WeStudentNurse @NursingTimes But... felt so lonely in leadership seminars. I'm talking about this stuff with #WeStNs & #150Leaders & I'm the only one. Send others would apply leadership to the ward only - leading an arrest or whatever
