Menstruation and contraception for teenagers and young women with learning disabilities
Puberty can be a really challenging time for all teenagers; but what about teenage girls with learning disabilities? Getting used to how the body is changing, and by this we mean hormonal changes and periods. In this chat we care examining how we can support teenagers and young women with menstruation and contraception. Are we teaching our teenage girls with learning disabilities enough about how to cope with all this? How many teenage girls with learning disabilities are struggling to manage their periods?
Throughout my career I’ve been aware of teenage girlswith learning disabilities struggling to manage their menstruation and being prescribed contraception to regulate/manage their periods. If I’m honest I used to firmly agree with this practice, for all you women out there who have PMT/PMS there is a real struggle at times to manage some of the physical and emotional side effects of PMS - so surely we should be protecting our teens and young women with LD through using contraception?
The use of oral contraception or birth control pills can inform teens when their periods are due to they can plan activities accordingly and ensure they have sanitary protection with them. It can also inform carers if the person isn’t able to manage their own periods. It can also make periods lighter and therefore more manageable.
However more recently I’ve started to wonder if we are actually increasing the vulnerability of young women with learning disabilities – are we still teaching enough about safe sex and using condoms? Are they more vulnerable to sexual abuse because the risk of pregnancy is removed?
Then there’s the psychological and emotional side effectof the menstrual cycle – how are we supporting people with this?

@hillsideliz @WeLDnurses I recently discovered period knickers for my daughter... they are like a revelation! She doesn’t need to wear a pad except heavy days and changes every 6-8 hrs! And you just wash the underwear! Saves so much upset for her! She’s yet to wear them to school cos of lockdown #weldns |

@WeLDnurses I have not had any experience however in my 2nd year of studies (3rd year student now waahh) I done my health promotional tool around puberty and periods. It was more specialised for a girl but the tool can be tweaked if needed to for say a group of girls rather than 1-1 #WeLDNs |

@WeLDnurses Depends whether it is for contraception or managing periods. I tend to prefer the mini pill for managing periods initially but if that works well the depo is a longer lasting alternative. For contraceptive purposes long lasting methods would be preferred #WeLDNs |

@WeLDnurses This depends on the reason that contraception is required and the person's individual circumstances. Additional considerations would be- ability/memory to take medication each day, perhaps at a fixed time and dysphagia affecting whether a person can safely take tablets. #weldns |
