#WeAHPs - Thursday 27th January 2022 8pm (GMT Standard Time) Experiences and support for neurodivergent students and AHPs

It is estimated that one in seven of the population is neurodivergent (Bupa, 2021). The neurodiversity paradigm is in a stage of emergence and thus the definitions are indistinct, however, dyslexia, dyspraxia, autism and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) are most commonly referred to under the label (Doyle, 2020).

Being neurodivergent can have many advantages - such as above-average creativity, visual reasoning, visual-spatial skills, verbal comprehension, hyper-focus and innovative thinking (Doyle, 2020). However, the potential differences in emotional control, memory, processing, concentration, communication and coordination can be disabling in a neurotypical world (British Psychological Society, 2017). If these are not addressed in education or the workplace, and the needed adjustments are not made, there is potential for serious significant impact on an individual’s experience of work and/or education (British PsychologicalSociety, 2017; Doyle, 2020; Griffin and Pollak, 2009; Jones et al, 2014; Young et al, 2021).

However, within the research, there is a lack of work investigating the experiences of neurodivergent healthcare students and professionals. Due to this, we do not know the unique barriers or opportunities they face, how well they are being addressed and what needs to be improved. For example, in radiography, there is no research at all exploring experiences of autistic or dyspraxic students and professionals or those with ADHD. Adjusting academic elements of university studies is thoroughly practised but is this carried over to clinical placement and does it continue after registration? To put any sort of support in place, there needs to be disclosure. Do students and professionals feel able to disclose? Do they face stigma? If they do disclose, what adjustments can be made and how effective are they? Are there special coping strategies employed? What could improve experiences?

Everyone, regardless of neurotype, is encouraged to participate in this Tweet Chat. The questions are written in a way that whether you’re a neurodivergent student, a neurotypical educator, a neurotypical practitioner or a neurodivergent manager, everyone can share their experiences, views and ideas on the topic.

Q2: Neurodivergent people find they learn and process new information differently. On placement, students are trying to fulfil the role they are training for while simultaneously learning how to do it. How do we support neurodivergent students? #WeAHPs https://t.co/E2i8yF2F2t
@ben_imaging
27 January 2022 20:15
@jackman_stuart @WeAHPs I do wonder if that comes from having to devise my own strategies to learn in a neurotypical education system #WeAHPs
@Katie_Moffat
27 January 2022 20:15
@WeAHPs On placement *everything* is important and makes it onto the to do list. Prioritising the learning, uni forms, reports, etc plus fitting into a team in a short space of time, visually looking present and engaged at all times, thinking externally rather than internally. #WeAHPs
@WeAHPs
27 January 2022 20:15
Seeing things differently is definitely a real strength. It can add real value to team decision making! ?? #WeAHPs https://twitter.com/jackman_stuart/status/1486793739137867782
@sherlynmelody
27 January 2022 20:15
#WeAHPs yes to the sensory! A student may not be aware of how they will cope in a new environment- this would be so important on placement. Important to do pre-placement visit. https://twitter.com/weahps/status/1486794280354164736

@sherlynmelody How can these challenges be overcome? Do you think students and educators get enough time to get to know one another to truly facilitate a real individualised approach or is this a challenge in itself too? #WeAHPs
@AnnaKnightSLT
27 January 2022 20:19
@WeAHPs Challenges- systems policies and procedures that may not always be logical, systems without accessible materials, fighting assiative tech on old fashioned systems #WeAHPs
@jackman_stuart
27 January 2022 20:19
@WeAHPs Let them learn and study in their own way, where there is pressure, make sure it is at a level which is suitable for that individual. #weahps
@ben_imaging
27 January 2022 20:19
@jackman_stuart @WeAHPs That's a big one! It depends on the environment for me I think. Hopefully, there's a culture where sharing new ideas is encouraged. That's the only way to bring about improvement #WeAHPs
@WeAHPs
27 January 2022 20:19

#WeAHPs I’ve never had a #neurodiverse student. But for me I would really want my student to feel confident and comfortable. 27 January 2022 20:28
@Katie_Moffat @WeAHPs #WeAHPs that’s a lot. To think I did that. Once you qualify and get a job you soon forget. Until imposter syndrome kicks it. But this is a good reminder of a fraction of the things a student may be thinking about ?????
@AnnaKnightSLT

@slt_mary
27 January 2022 20:30
@WeAHPs Consider the environment - e.g. quiet space to process information/write notes. Also provide regular specific feedback to students so that they know how they're doing throughout the placement. #WeAHPs

@sonialouisejone @WeAHPs #WeAHPs, I had great placements & I hate it when other people don’t have a good experience. It makes me so cross. You are there to learn as a student you will be nervous anything else on top is going to be hard. We were all students once. Educators should remember that ??
@jstjohnmatthews
27 January 2022 20:33
@WeAHPs For me no two people have the same profile so support has to be very individualised. Using the label of #dyslexia can be sloppy as I experience #dyslexia differently to someone else. So not always an issue disclosing but an issue articulating my needs #weAHPs
@jackman_stuart
27 January 2022 20:33
@WeAHPs How inspiring for a ND student to be able to look up to a leader they can relate too. A strong presence of ND people in leadership roles can only be a good thing! #weahps
@ben_imaging
27 January 2022 20:33
@WeAHPs I feel there is huge pressure on the individual. They have to disclose, educate colleagues and self-advocate to ensure they get the support they need. This can be difficult as a student. #WeAHPs

Q4: In accordance with the Equality Act 2010, there must be reasonable adjustments made for any disabilities one may encounter. Have you experienced any adjustments for neurodivergence? How are adjustments viewed in your profession? #WeAHPs https://t.co/NhsYVKQE3V
@Katie_Moffat
27 January 2022 20:36
@WeAHPs I'm usually giving myself plenty constructive criticism on my performance, that often I don't need that extra push or constructive comment that might be typical to give a student. If I have the chance to explain how reflective a thinker I am it helps a lot with this. #WeAHPs
@WeAHPs
27 January 2022 20:36
@ben_imaging What would be the one thing we could tackle first to help this situation Ben? That's the million dollar question I guess isn't it! But where do we start and how can people help? #WeAHPs
@ben_imaging
27 January 2022 20:36
@AnnaKnightSLT @WeAHPs Awful. I'm sorry that happened. This is why disclosure presents as such an issue. Placement is often toted as a ‘three-year job interview’, thus students are fearful about the impression they make on potential work colleagues and that they will be treated differently. #WeAHPs
@WeAHPs
27 January 2022 20:36
This is a great idea ?? #WeAHPs https://twitter.com/jackman_stuart/status/1486799947567706113
@Nich0laSmith
27 January 2022 20:37
@jstjohnmatthews @WeAHPs Yes! People with the same diagnosis can have completely different needs. So important to understand the needs of the individual, not just a diagnosis #WeAHPs
@AnnaKnightSLT
27 January 2022 20:38
@sherlynmelody Provide dedicated catch up time on placement to refresh memory go back to slides etc. I think QUALITY is the key word. Don't just go in with how you work, ask how the student works best if they know it take it, if not offer a range of ideas #weahps
@Katie_Moffat
27 January 2022 20:38
@WeAHPs My last placement had a library, and the difference it made to have a dedicated space was HUGE. I would typically be in 2-3 hours early, which is what I need to organise my thoughts and prepare for each day. Knowing i had a place to be made me much calmer. #WeAHPs

@WeAHPs I think asking the individual how they feel they could work/learn/reflect best and trying to accommodate an environment for that. Recognising the individuality of all students #WeAHPs

@WeAHPs Been discussing this with our multidisciplinary neurodiverse student group (yes, we need a catchier name). We are thinking of a neurodivergent advocate role in each department that ensures everyone is getting the support they need. This could be linked to student liaison #WeAHPs

@Katie_Moffat That must have made that placement experience much more fulfilling for you Katie! Did you find the library yourself or what is something that was pointed out to you by others? I'm wondering if things such as this often get missed by those who could really benefit! #WeAHPs

@ben_imaging @WeAHPs I agree Ben. Can be difficult in daily life too as it's very hard to advocate for yourself if overwhelmed or in distress. #WeAHPs

@WeAHPs On my first day I had a tour of the whole place, shown the library, how to access it, and how to book a room if I needed to. If it hadn't been shown to me I very likely wouldn't have used it as I'd have been worried about getting told I was wrong! #WeAHPs

@jackman_stuart @WeAHPs @jstjohnmatthews We give mentor and assessor training to clinical staff, but maybe more needs to be done to look at the consistency of training/teaching? I've been very well supported in my lecturing role and delivering teaching sessions. #WeAHPs

@Katie_Moffat @sonialouisejone @WeAHPs One of my placement sites had a student room for us to eat lunch in. Some people complained as they thought it was separating us too much, but I loved it as it was much quieter and I could process things easier. #WeAHPs

@ben_imaging @WeAHPs 100%, i find there is a lot of ignorance in the sense of not researchign what may help a student instead expecting the student to know what will help, perhaps buddying with a ND AHP would help to share tips and tricks #WeAHPs
@WeAHPs
27 January 2022 20:51
@RachBrandreth That's a tricky one isn't it! How do you think we could help with this particular challenge? What would you find beneficial from experience? #WeAHPs

@Nich0laSmith @WeAHPs @jstjohnmatthews Awesome, I’m generalising a fair bit of course, it sounds like you have a good system. I don’t know about other places but I end up working with a lot of people who aren’t assessors etc. Your environment sounds like a great place to be btw! :) #weahps

@WeAHPs Personal experience: I went through the assessments & recommendation were made but many of the recommendations were deemed things the employer should be doing as standard so they didn’t get funded. My employer didn’t provide these things & I felt it was a waste of time #WeAHPs

@Katie_Moffat Hopefully it gave you/gives you the confidence to seek these places out/ask about them in future placements? Knowing they exist/that you're deffo allowed access is half the battle! Everything can be uncertain when you're a student (or even as a member of staff sometimes!) #WeAHPs

27 January 2022 20:58
@WeAHPs Informally based on a conversation about learning styles. I gave examples of how I process- colours, mind maps, drawings, needing to see things big (A3+) before I can fit them into a document. That's impossible to do after each day so my PE was happy to read my mind maps #WeAHPs

@Katie_Moffat @WeAHPs I am exactly the same. A tour of a whole hospital is completely lost on me. I'll remember none of it. I'm much better if each Monday morning, I get shown around the area I'll be in that week. It's fresh info that I'll be using. #WeAHPs
