#WeNurses - Thursday 3rd March 2022 8:30pm (GMT Standard Time) Do you have a masters or PHD?

If you haven't joined in a tweet chat before it's very simple.    Here's a guide

 Chat Details

Hosted by WeNurses using #WeNurses

For quite sometime now nursing has been an all graduate profession however what about further education and development as a nurse? How do we, as nurses manage our own professional development and what role does continuing professional development at a masters or PHD level play? Clark et al (2015) state "There is limited evidence of the relationship between postgraduate study and improved patient outcomes. Evidence that does exist suggests that nurses who engage in postgraduate study are more likely to have improved critical thinking and decision-making skills, demonstrate leadership qualities to empower them to challenge poor practice, and have the skills needed for advanced clinical practice roles."

This #WeNurses tweetchat aims to explore the value of continuing professional development as nurses and how it can improve care and further our careers as nurses.

This tweetchat will follow our the following format:

  • Pre tweetchat - two poll questions
  • Tweetchat - from 8:30 pm - 9:00 pm we will be hosting a short and intense half hour of conversation
  • Post tweetchat - two more poll questions

Some of the questions will include:

  • Do you have a masters?
  • Is a masters needed to progress in nursing?
  • How can nurses continue to push their learning and development as a nurse ?
  • What has your learning and development looked like as a nurse? How did you progress?
  • What is your advice to nurses junior to yourself in regards to learning and development?
  • What help and support is there out there for nurses wishing to further their education?
  • What do you feel the most important outcome is regarding increased numbers of nurses being educated to masters level?
  • Do you feel that all nurses should have a masters?

@WeNurses Q1, Seek shadowing opportunities either to develop specialist skills / knowledge or to explore other role opportunities i.e: Education roles, #CNS, leadership #WeNurses
@SianP107
03 March 2022 20:33
@nursingdopaminI @WeNurses #wenurses, you need to study what you are interested in definitely at masters level or above..
@AgencyNurse
03 March 2022 20:34
@WeNurses There are lots of ways - every pathway is unique, it's one of the fab things about nursing. However as a nurse working in a non traditional role for most of my career things that cost a lot of money have always been a barrier. #WeNurses

@WeNurses I think we need to recognise informal and non-accredited learning a bit more in Nursing. Incentivise Nurses to engage in learning through Quality Improvement & on-site educational development - then allow for recognition of experiential learning on accredited courses #WeNurses
@ProfJuneG
03 March 2022 20:34
@WeNurses A Masters or PhD are just university awards, not 'qualifications' as such. What they say is that you have studied a particular subject in depth, to a certain standard. If you don't keep studying, post degree, then that knowledge will be out of date. #WeNurses nurses
@PhilBallRN
03 March 2022 20:34
@WeNurses Q1. #wenurses taking an interest can lead to all sorts of routes to development, not just further degrees, there are networks for specialisms, much more in way of online opportunities, small sessions 1 to 1, sharing stories of experiences
@clarahopscotch

#wenurses This is an important point. Academic awards don't need to be associated with hierarchy. Imo they shouldn't be. Those proxies for high levels of in depth clinical knowledge are needed at the bedside. I dont understand why employers equate academic awards with hierarchy. https://twitter.com/talesofthesmith/status/1499483813860327424
@JaneNewson
03 March 2022 20:41
@WeNurses I think following personal interest. I've been led by patient need but opportunities attached to work haven't been great. I've been the driver which is I guess both good and bad #WeNurses hoping for more opportunities in my next role.

#wenurses Q2 I have multiple #HE and professional qualifications and completed lots of #CPD courses over the years - but none of the ‘letters’ matter unless I use my learning to make positive change for myself, others and most importantly the profession - this is what I focus on

#wenurses Do an academic award in your specialist area if you want to, just dont expect it to last you for the rest of your career! If you want to be expert, then continuous learning is important and look for different ways of showing that you are doing that. https://twitter.com/WeNurses/status/1499487284088999938

@WeNurses Q3 Always seek out opportunities, if something interests you follow it, cliche but if you believe it you can achieve it! #WeNurses

@WeNurses Q3. Choose opportunities carefully, time and energy are finite resources. Know your value as a nurse and check in with that as you develop. Reflection is extremely important and helpful. Remember through all the growth & development why you’re a nurse. #WeNurses

@WeNurses Get your employer to at least pay something towards courses that benefit both them and you, use your knowledge at work to make positive changes. Exploitation of Nurses paying for education is normalised and should be questioned in my opinion #WeNurses
