#WeDNs - Thursday 26th September 2019 8pm (GMT Standard Time) Supervision and Assessment in Practice

If you haven't joined in a tweet chat before it's very simple.    Here's a guide

 Chat Details

Hosted by WeCommNurses using #WeDNs

Previously, Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) guidance on standards for learning and assessment in practice advises that Specialist Community Practice Qualification (SPQ) District Nurse (DN )students should be supervised and assessed in practice by a practitioner who holds a minimum of sign off mentor status and is recorded as a Community Specialist Practitioner with the NMC (NMC 2008). Frequently, many SPQ DN courses go beyond this and advocate the use of qualified practice teachers, similar to those supervising and assessing practice on sister courses such as Specialist Community Public Health Nursing (NMC 2004, NMC 2008).

The new guidance published by theNMC last year advised a new model for supervision and assessment, which introduced two new roles: Practice Supervisor and Practice Assessor (NMC 2018).The NMC advises that a practice supervisor must have current knowledge and experience of the areas in which they are providing support and supervision.  They do not have to have the same regulatory body, and they will provide the majority of the supervision in practice. A practice assessor differs in that they must have a relevant qualification and will be the professional who assesses the student has achieved the competencies set in the course whether that be undergraduate nursing or a post qualifying course such as prescribing or district nursing.

Amongst this transition we have also seen the introduction of the apprenticeship model which will also shape how practice placements are supervised and assessed and so we find ourselves in changing times. This twitter chat hopes to explore supervision and learning in practice in post qualifying courses.

  1. What is the current model for supervision and assessment of SPQ DN students within your clinical area when in practice?
  2.  Are there any challenges within this model?
  3. What are the benefits to this existing model?
  4. How will the new standards for supervision and assessment be implemented in your area for DNs?
  5. Who will be the future practice supervisors and what preparation will they need?
  6. Who will be the future practice assessors and what preparation will they need?
  7. What will the relationship be between the practice supervisor, practice assessor and the academic assessor?
  8. Will any adaptions need to be made for the apprenticeship model?

@RitchieGeorgina @WeDistrictNurse Would this depend on the level of training/education the practice educator comes with? Many may be with the old mentor qualification? Should this allow them to teach skills to groups in practice as opposed to mentor/support individual students? #weDNs

@lkashworth1 @WeDistrictNurse #weDNs i firmly believe that the 'mentor' qualification is appropriate for teaching small groups or 1;2;1 in clinical practice but i am not sure it prepares you to teach in a class room with multiple learning styles, disabilities etc - what does everyone else think?
